5 ridiculous items that divorcing couples have fought over!

Not all marriages are successful. There may be different reasons to separate. Each marital relationship that breaks have their own unique cause to it. But sometimes, divorce lawyers encounter couples who split or continue to prolong divorce proceedings over some seemingly invaluable items. Canadian lawyer, Deepa Tailor gives us 5 ridiculous items that her client couples fought over.

Marriages and the reasons for divorce

Often, marriages end due to various reasons. At times, the reason stated might not be the true one. There is something deeper and more prolonged ongoing in the lives of the partners that ultimately leads to the divorce. But what reason comes up in the court documents might sometimes be very silly. Maybe, these meaningless reasons might have served as the breaking point of the relationships.

Couples might not want to disclose the true reason for the separation. And also, some may continue to fight and not negotiate over some possessions or items that might not have been worth the time of the court and the money spent on the lawyers.

5 ridiculous items that Deepa Tailor’s clients fought in a divorce

Deepa Tailor works for the Canadian family law firm, Divorce Lawyers. She compiled a list of 5 most hilarious items over which some of her clients fought for in their divorce. She got the idea after reading about a 1990 divorce case in which the partners were busy fighting endlessly over their collection of Beanie Babies. Deepa says:

“Most Beanie Babies nowadays are worth little more than a few dollars, which really speaks to how silly it is to get worked up over invaluable and non-sentimental items of property in a divorce, especially when all the time spent arguing over who gets what is time you’re paying your attorney.”

One ashtray

One of Deepa’s male client wanted to own an ashtray that he had purchased on their trip to Las Vegas. He was ready to spend USD 5k in lawyer’s fees for it. He did not budge from this demand even though his lawyer said that he would purchase a new similar one from Las Vegas for him.

The reason for his persistence in demand was that he wanted to smash the ashtray on the steps of the courtroom in front of his wife. Deepa narrates:

“Sure enough, when he won, he did exactly that, and said the look on his wife’s face was worth the money!”

Half of the shampoo in the house

This was a ridiculous demand on the part of a female client. She wanted her husband to measure each opened bottle of shampoo and pour out half of it for her. Was this demand worth the money she spent in court for it?

Batteries of the remote control and wall clock

One of the female clients had demanded that even the batteries of the remote control and the wall clock should be divided between her and her estranged husband; one each for each of them!!! This extreme step only would upset the lawyer and the judge.

One of the couples fought over their old, stained Tupperware. It was silly on their part but they did battle for it.

Deepa advises:

“My goal is to help them see the bigger picture — focusing on their future well-being rather than getting caught up in the heat of the moment over minor possessions,”
