Timothy West diagnosed as a hypertensive
Timothy West’s high blood pressure was picked up during routine testing by an insurance firm. Remembering the time, Timothy West had revealed in an interview:
“Quite out of the blue, while I was working in Australia, the producer came up to me with an expression of extreme concern on his face and put his hand gently on my arm. He asked in a most solicitous tone of voice, ‘Do you feel all right?’”
Timothy further added:
“I was rather startled, as you might imagine, because at that moment I felt very well indeed.”
He later came to know the whole story. During a routine checkup by the Production Company’s insurers, it came to light that Timothy was suffering from high blood pressure or hypertension.
It was an accidental pickup. Timothy felt blessed that his hypertension was picked up early so that he could take measures to bring it under control. He was happy that the diagnosis was made before he had some complications with it such as stroke or heart ailment.
When Timothy West was diagnosed with hypertension, he was in his mid-fifties. He was not obese but had some stress. He was not consuming high fat, high carbohydrate junk foods and was not fond of puddings or processed dishes.
His meals consisted of more vegetables and meat. In short, Timothy did not fit into the high-risk group but still, he had high blood pressure which was picked up by a simple blood pressure measurement.
Timothy West minimized his salt intake in food. He also started regular exercises. He minimized car use and walked and used public transport to reach his place of work.
He brought down his weight and also regularly took blood pressure recordings. He realized that even minimal stress raised his blood pressure and he immediately would take things in an easy way.
He said:
“I see the reading has gone up and think, ‘Time to rein in a bit and take it a little easier’.”
Timothy West also closely works with the BPA (Blood pressure association) to raise awareness of this silent killer. He gives his example and advises people to get their blood pressure checked.

High Blood pressure and its ill-effects
High blood pressure or hypertension is when the pressure of blood in the arteries is higher than normal. Having a persistently high blood pressure could lead to various complications such as ischemic heart disease, heart failure, stroke, damage to the peripheral veins, eye problems and loss of vision, and chronic kidney disease and failure.
The downside is that when the blood pressure is elevated, it does not produce any symptoms in more than 90% of the cases. Some may experience a mild headache or giddiness.
The condition said to lead to high blood pressure is stress, high salt intake, high body weight, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol, certain medicines, diabetes mellitus, and kidney disorders. Lifestyle changes go a long way in bringing this disease under control.
Healthy eating is vital. Low salt, fat, and refined carbohydrates should be adhered to while eating. Regular exercises and stress reduction are beneficial. Weight reduction is also to be done if the person is obese or overweight.
