Women always intrigued Val

Besides the above, women had always intrigued him. He narrates:

“I’ve always found women infinitely more interesting than men,”

Explaining further on it, he said:

“Perhaps that’s why we’ve always gotten along. We are big oaf elephants… and they are butterflies.”

Out of all his relationships and the breaks, he states that his breakup from actress Daryl Hannah was the most painful for him. He had dated the actress from 2001 after they worked together on the movie In God We Trust. But Daryl, 59 is now happily married to Neil Young. The couple dated and wed in 2018.

Val wrote:

“Lord knows I’ve suffered heartache. But Daryl was by far the most painful of all. (Neil Young, I always loved you, but I’m afraid I hate you now).”

And because of Daryl’s wedding with Neil, he has begun to hate Neil now. Besides Daryl, Val had also dated Cindy Crawford, Cher, and Angelina Jolie.

Val talks of his throat cancer

The actor spoke about throat cancer which afflicted him since 2015. He had dated Cher in the early 1980s. And it was she who came to give him support during these difficult times in his life. Val has revealed that when his health was deteriorating, Cher asked him to come over and stay at his guest house. Further Val recalled in the memoir:

“One night, I suddenly awoke vomiting blood that covered the bed like a scene out of ‘The Godfather,’”

He continued:

“I prayed immediately, then called 911. Then alerted my hostess. Cher stepped in and stepped up.”

Cher, 73 also tried to keep Val cheerful and made him laugh. Elaborating on it, Val writes:

“And yet even in my grave condition, I saw her scanning the paramedic, who was Gregory Peck drop-dead handsome. Only in Hollywood, right? Despite the fact that I was covered in blood, I caught her eye and bounced my brows like Groucho Marx. Hubba hubba. Cher was bashful to be busted but then couldn’t help laughing out loud at the audacity.

“Here we were, joking about beauty and desire, while I looked like a stuntman from Tarantino’s ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and, yes, while my life seemed to be in mortal danger. We laughed out loud before they finished with my vitals and shut me up with an oxygen mask.”

Val had a tracheotomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy and is now cancer-free. Val states:

“I have been healed of cancer for over four years now, and there has never been any re-occurrence. I am so grateful.”
