Sheila Mercier and her past life secret
The late actress Sheila died at her ripe old age of 100. Before taking up a career in TV, Sheila had served the RAF during World War II. But she was a victim of rape at that time.
An officer had taken advantage of the world chaos at that time and raped Sheila. He left her pregnant with a child. Later, Sheila gave birth to a daughter but put her up for adoption. It was common in those days to do so considering the stigma attached to rape at that me.
The young girls who fell prey to the list of men at that time would hide the pregnancy from those close to the family and after delivery of the baby gave the child up for adoption. Sheila did similarly and kept the whole affair a secret.
The daughter Janet tracks her down
The TV actress Sheila thought that everything was over and forgotten. She went ahead and got married later to fellow actor Peter Mercier. The couple had one son named Nigel.
But Sheila’s first-born daughter named Janet managed to track her real mother. It was thirty years after adoption that Janet found out who her biological mother was and decided to meet her.
Shelia had jotted down the details of her past life experience and reunion with her long-lost daughter in her 1994 autobiography called Annie’s Song: My Life & Emmerdale.
Sheila Mercier’s death
Sheila died on 13 December 2019 at age of 100. The Emmerdale bosses confirmed it and their spokesperson said:
“Its always sad to hear of the death of an actor who played a significant part in Emmerdale’s success.
“Even more so when that actor was in the very first episode and around whose family the show was built. ‘Annie Sugden’ embodied all the virtues of Yorkshire…
“She was hard working, resilient, determined, down to earth and didn’t suffer fools gladly. Sheila had many of those qualities too, putting the needs of the programme above her own and always delivering a great performance come rain or shine. She will be greatly missed.”
Sheila was with the show since its inception in 1972 and continued as a regular cast member until 1994. After that, she did guest appearances. Her last appearance on the show was in the year 2009.
