Albert Pujols, 42 decided to part ways with his wife Deidre Pujols after 22 years of marriage.
The St. Louis Cardinals player released a statement on Monday (April 4) that he was filing for divorce with the help of his agent Dan Lozano.
Last week, Pujols signed a one-year contract to return to the Cardinals with a $2.5 million deal where he played his first 11 seasons in the league.
MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand took to Twitter to announce the divorce news. He tweeted a lengthy statement on behalf of MVP Sports Group client, Albert Pujols.
The tweet reads,
“I’ve been asked a lot of questions over the past few days regarding what’s been going on at home and sdly, after 22 years of marriage, I have made the decision to file for divorce from my wife Deidre,”
The news broke just days after his then-wife brain surgery. Thankfully, she had undergone successful surgery to remove a brain tumor. The players acknowledged the timing of the news considering Deidre’s diagnosis.
He said,
“I realize this is not the most opportune time with Opening Day approaching and other family events that have recently taken place. These situations are never easy and isn’t something that just happened overnight,”
Albert concluded the statement by saying “remain committed” to raising their children including Isabella from his previous relationship. He also asked for their privacy during this time and the privacy of their five children.
Why is Pujols divorcing his wife?
A day after the divorce news broke, TMZ obtained their divorce document where Pujols cited “irreconcilable differences”. The forum reported that the couple has been split up since February.
The MLB legend reportedly requested joint custody of their three minor children. The couple met back in 1999 and married on January 1, 2000. They shared four children Sophia, Ezra, Esther Grace, and Albert Jr.
Albert is also a father to Isabelle, from his previous relationship.
Who is Albert Pujols wife, Deidre Pujols?
Deidre came into the limelight of the media as the wife of Albert Pujols. She was born and raised in Roeland Park, Kansas.
As per her Instagram page, she is a part of the Pujols Family Foundations. The foundation opened up to help children with disabilities as well as help “the impoverished living in the Dominican Republic”.
Similarly, she listed the Open Gate International nonprofit organization on her Instagram bio.
Brain Surgery
Last month, Deidre revealed that she was undergoing brain surgery via her respective Instagram handle. She had a brain tumor that was discovered back in October 2021.
Following her surgery, she said,
“Despite the pain which was to (be) expected the surgery went well. 99% of the tumor was removed. The recovery journey begins… Thanks you all again for all the prayers and well wishes during this very challenging time.”
