The criminal charges against Alec Baldwin have been dropped
Alec Baldwin was facing two charges of involuntary manslaughter following an accidental fatal shooting incident on the set of the movie Rust in October 2021.
The tragic incident resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was shot by a live bullet from a prop gun being used by the actor himself. However, the charges have now been dropped less than two weeks before the trial was scheduled to start.
His lawyer told the BBC:
“Our follow-up investigation will remain active and ongoing. We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident.”
The decision was made because of the “discovery of new facts that require further investigation”.
The actor had been practicing firing the gun on set when it discharged and took Hutchins’ life.
Although he denied pulling the trigger, an FBI report concluded that the gun could not have been fired without the trigger being pulled.
Alec Baldwin thanked his wife and lawyer on Instagram
Alec Baldwin took to social media to thank his wife Hilaria Baldwin and his lawyer for supporting him during these tough times.
He uploaded a picture of him sitting with his wife with the caption:
“I owe everything I have to this woman. (and to you, Luke)”.
The charges against Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer who was also charged with involuntary manslaughter and pleaded not guilty, were dismissed.
Baldwin’s lawyers and prosecutors were in discussions before a hearing on May 3rd, during which a judge in New Mexico was set to decide whether Baldwin would face trial.
The announcement of the dropped charges comes shortly after Mary Carmack-Altwies, the district attorney who charged Baldwin, stepped down from the case.
According to a statement from Carmack-Altwies’ spokesperson, she decided to step aside to concentrate on “broader public safety needs in New Mexico’s first judicial district”.

Rust has started filming again after the on-set tragedy
On Thursday, filming resumed for Alec Baldwin’s Western film “Rust,” which had been put on hold for 18 months following the death of Halyna.
Baldwin is still playing the lead role. The production has relocated to Montana for principal photography.
Melina Spadone, ‘Rust’ lawyer said:
“It will bar any use of working weapons and any form of ammunition. Live ammunition is – and always was – prohibited on set.”
Bianca Cline has been chosen to replace Halyna Hutchins as the cinematographer for the film “Rust,” while director Joel Souza will be returning.
Hutchins’ husband Matthew will serve as an executive producer on the project. In addition to playing the lead role, Baldwin is also a producer for the film.
In February, Rust Movie Productions announced that the scene being rehearsed at the time of the shooting had been rewritten.
The company also stated that the current cinematographer would “realize Halyna’s vision for the film” and donate her earnings to charity.
Director Souza said in February:
“Though bittersweet, I am grateful that a brilliant and dedicated new production team joining former cast and crew are committed to completing what Halyna and I started. My every effort on this film will be devoted to honouring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud. It is a privilege to see this through on her behalf.”
