Alexei Yashin is a Russian former professional ice hockey centerman. He played 12 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He captained famous teams such as Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders.

He was born on October 10, 1972, in Sverdlovsk, Soviet Union. Not much is known about his early life except the fact that he showed a keen interest in ice hockey from a very young age.

Alexei Yashin’s career ignited when he was selected as the first draft pick in the history of the expansion of Ottawa Senators (2nd overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft). He scored 79 points for which he was considered as the team’s brightest young star. He was assigned as the captain in the 1998-89 season. In the same season, he scored 94 points and was runner-up for both Hart Trophy for the NHL’s most valuable player, and being named an NHL Second Team All-Star. However, his time at Senators was tumultuous.

So in 2001, he was sent to the New York Islanders by signing a massive contract worth $87.5 Million. He was considered overpaid and virtually un-tradeable. In the 2005-06 season, he was appointed as team captain. However, his performance was not enough to be cheered by fans and his team. Ultimately, Islanders decided to release him by buying out the remainder of Yashin’s contract in June 2007.

On July 20, 2007, Yashin signed a contract with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian Super League. He then signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in 2009. Later on, in 2011 he signed a one-year contract with CSKA Moscow which was the final team of his career.

After retirement, he was appointed as general manager of the Russian National Women’s Hockey Team in 2012.

As of 2022,  he has a net worth of $42 Million but his salary is unknown.
