And he is telling the boy to empty those ice cube bags into his bath tub. He is getting ready for an ice bath. He uses it for health and fitness.
What is an ice bath? Does it have any benefits?
What is an ice bath or cold water immersion?
Ice bath is a form of cold therapy or cryotherapy. The other forms are cold showers and cold chambers. In all these forms of cold therapy, the body is exposed to cold water or ice for its claimed health benefits.
In cold bath, the bath tub is filled with water and then cooled by means of ice cubes. The temperature of water is made to fall to around 10-12 degrees Celsius. Some people may even bring the water temperature down to as low as 3-4 degrees Celsius.
This bath has a very long history to go with it. In some temperate regions of the world, people flock to the rivers and lake in order to take a dip in the ice cold water of these water bodies. Men usually go shirtless during these dips.
In ice bath, people usually immerse their body for 5-15 minutes. It is said that when they do so, the skin and muscle blood vessels constrict. It pushes the blood to the inner organs of the body. Later, when the person comes out of the cold water, the blood vessels dilate and make the body warm again.
It is claimed that this helps decrease inflammation. But there is no research backing for this type of cryotherapy. There are also some commercial centers that have come up in order to provide this therapy.
Health benefits of ice baths?
People do this for a number of different reasons. But commonly, it is for health and well-being and fitness. The health benefits claimed are:
-Decrease body inflammation
-Minimize muscle soreness after a heavy exercise or any form of exertion
-Elevation of mood
-Decrease cardiovascular risks
-Increase body immunity
But ice baths must be done in a proper way and for the proper duration. Bathtubs should be of a suitable size. Water should not be too cold. If it is too cold, the body temperature might suddenly fall to dangerously low levels leading to hypothermia which might become a medical emergency. Too prolonged immersion might also be similarly risky and cause fatalities.
Direct contact of the body with ice cubes could lead to burns. If you are suffering from any heart or lung conditions or on some chronic medications for other health issues, please consult your physician before resorting to this therapy.
