Andrew McCutchen is set to return to the Pittsburgh Pirates

Andrew McCutchen is returning to the Pirates. According to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the free agent has agreed to a one-year contract to join the Pirates again.

McCutchen will probably get a few opportunities to play designated hitter, but since Ji-Man Choi and Carlos Santana were already acquired by Pittsburgh this offseason, one of the two is likely to be the team’s primary DH option.

Although McCutchen adds a complimentary right-handed bat to the Pirates’ outfield mix to go along with left-handed-swinging corner possibilities like Jack Suwinski and Cal Mitchell, his influence on the choice of whether to trade or keep Reynolds is limited to nonexistent.

Beyond his accomplishments on the field and the guidance he’ll give to a number of young Pirates who are just starting out, McCutchen will give fans a lot to shout about in 2023 as he pursues a number of career milestones.

He needs 52 more hits to accomplish 2000 for his career, and he needs just 13 more home runs to reach 300. McCutchen is a strong bet to hit both round numbers this year because he slugged 17 home runs last season and has never hit fewer than 13 in a complete season’s worth of games in his career.
