Angelina Jolie talks about her past career aspirations
The Oscar-winning actress is set to guest in an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this Thursday. This is her very first late-night talk show appearance in a decade.
Jolie, 49, previously revealed to the host on this show that she once considered becoming a funeral director.
“You’re an incredible actor, but I saw some things online. I was wondering if I could ask you if these rumors are true of other careers that you might have had,” says Fallon, 50. “I’d be interested to see if any of these are real.”
“I’m interested, too. Okay,” replies Jolie with a smile.
Asks Fallon, “First of all, is it true that before acting you were studying to become a funeral director?”
“Yes,” says the answer from Jolie, to Fallon’s surprise. “Doesn’t it make sense though?” she jokes with a laugh.
The actress explains, “My grandfather died, and I remember thinking this is not how they should be. This should be a celebration of life.
The Oscar winner added, ”Since I’m not afraid of death and I’m comfortable with it, I thought, ‘This would be a great career path for me. … I could, like, make this better. I could do a thing here.'”
“Yes,” says Fallon. “We need more people like that.” Jolie then jokes, “That’s my fall-back career now.”
Jolie promotes her new movie Maria
Meanwhile, she is busy promoting the film Maria. In it, she stars as the late opera singer, Maria Callas. The film is in select theaters now and on Netflix on December 11.
Back in 2011, the star, who is now a mother of six, said on the show 60 Minutes, “I really, really considered becoming a funeral director.”
“It sounds like a very strange, eccentric thing to do, or a dark thing to do. But in reality, I just lost my grandfather and I was really upset with his funeral,” said Jolie at that time.
“So we talked about trying to find new ways to think about this whole thing-around how one dies and how families cope with that death and what death itself is-maybe a little differently,” and this was supposed to be my plan b if acting didn’t work out.

What is Jolie’s take on aging, family, and ex-marriage?
Jolie also shared her views on aging in Hollywood; she feels that her experience in the industry has made her career better with age.
‘‘I have been an impeccable mind that has seen life experiences add depth to the work I kind of see to be very different from how not all actresses have such a mindset,” the actress said in an interview with The Times published on Saturday.
Jolie acknowledged that many of her female colleagues in Hollywood often speak about not finding as many opportunities when they grow older but her experiences have been quite the opposite.
“I have gotten better parts with age,” she declared. “I have started to see it more as the life experience that is bringing that into the role rather than their being these wonderful parts I haven’t gotten.”
She seemed to suggest that changing her thinking would be the answer for giving superior performances, not necessarily getting the ideal roles.
Her comments seemed to run counter to those offered by actresses like Geena Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal who have complained about the difficulty in finding worthy roles as they grow older within the industry.
Jolie remains quite about her ex-husband Brad Pitt
The conversation steered towards Jolie’s personal life, where, without delving into the personal details of the current legal tussle between her and former husband Brad Pitt, which she called too sensitive an issue to discuss, she did talk of what mattered to her today.
Jolie said that her family and children remain her greatest concern while she pursues the work of an actress.
Follow her meltdown as she deals with the omnipresent problem of growing old, and then follow up with its negative effects on her strength. But Jolie would disagree, feeling that age has added richness to her contribution as an actress.
Those reflections will give a different light on her unique approach towards aging coupled with its advantages, forging her way into the achievement of finding fulfillment in both her personal and professional domain-a strange case indeed in an industry sort of leaning the other way.
