Anthony Bowens is openly gay and dating Michael Pavano. But their relationship was made difficult by fans who shouted homophobic slurs at him during the match. On 9th December 2021, he competed in an eight-man tag match alongside his teammate Max Caster when one of the audience shouted slurs at him.

Remembering the incident, Anthony said,

“Unfortunately, that kind of stuff comes with the territory, being out LGTBQ athlete. This is actually the first time I’ve audibly heard something like that during a performance or television. It’s not indicative of the AEW fans at all because any interaction I’ve had with them since starting the company has all been positive.”

Anthony claimed that he is used to such things as he and his partner Michael have a YouTube channel where they received tons of hate comments. Bowens came out as gay in 2019 and has continued to ignore the abuse he receives. He is representing the LGBT+ community and athletes that are part of the community.
