His Twitter post
On 12 April 2018, Arnold who was also the former California Governor tweeted a video in which he said:
“I just want you to know that I’m feeling much better. I can’t say, even with my positive attitude, that I’m great, because I’m not great yet,”
He continued:
“Great is a totally different level. But I’m good. I get good care, good doctors, good nurses. Everything is fantastic.”
It was a 53-second video clip that he had filmed in front of a chessboard. He said that he was playing the indoor game to freshen his mind and memory. He further said:
“And we move forward, So I will stay in touch with all of you. And thank you all for being such jewels.”
His ailment
Arnold had a pulmonary valve problem. He had undergone heart valve surgery for it in 1997. This surgery was to correct a defective valve which he was born with.
But things had worsened over time and hence he had required a pulmonic valve replacement again now. It was a planned procedure that was performed on 29 March at the Cedars-Sinai.
Talking about his previous surgery and now, Arnold said:
“That 1997 replacement valve was never meant to be permanent, and has outlived it’s life expectancy, so he chose to replace it,”
By this, he meant the cardiovascular surgeon who evaluated and operated on him.
His humor side
Arnold has tried to retain his sense of humor despite such a major surgery and the need to go under the knife the second time. On 2 April, he tweeted:
“It’s true: I’m back!”
He went on to state jokingly:
“I went to sleep expecting to wake up with a small incision and woke up with a big one — but guess what? I woke up, and that’s something to be grateful for. Thank you to the doctors & nurses. And I’m truly filled with gratitude for all of the kind messages.”
His spokesperson also revealed to US Weekly last month that Arnold is doing well after his major surgery. He is laughing, joking with people, and is generally in high spirits.
About his current family
Arnold has been in relationships with many women. He had first dated an English teacher in 1969 and continued to reside with her until 1974. Her name was Barbara Outland. Explaining the reason for the separation, he wrote in his memoir:
“Basically it came down to this: she was a well-balanced woman who wanted an ordinary, solid life, and I was not a well-balanced man, and hated the very idea of ordinary life.”
In July 1977, Arnold met Beverly Hills hairdresser’s assistant Sue Moray and this Venice Beach meeting soon turned into love. It was an open relationship and Sue had said:
“We were faithful when we were both in LA… but when he was out of town, we were free to do whatever we wanted.”
He met TV journalist Maria Shriver in 1977 and dated both Sue and Maria until 1978. He married Maria on 26 April 1986 in Massachusetts.
