Filmmaker Jeff Baena is no more

Aubrey Plaza‘s husband Jeff Baena has passed away. He was 47.

The dead body of the late filmmaker was found inside the home in Los Angeles by the assistant on Friday morning. TMZ was the first to  report the news. A police response to a call at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time for a death investigation.

Baena was pronounced dead on site, and law enforcement sources revealed to the outlet that the filmmaker died by suicide. It is not immediately clear what happened or how he died.

Though Page Six tried contacting the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Coroner’s Office, there hasn’t been a response yet. The police or his family is yet to speak about the cause of his death.

Plaza, 40, has not spoken about her husband’s death. Her rep referred us to a statement on Deadline Saturday: “The family is devastated and asks for privacy at this difficult time.”

The actress from “White Lotus” married Baena in 2021 after dating for 10 years. They had no children together.

In May of that year, Plaza posted on her Instagram, congratulating her darling husband for the film that he penned, “Spin Me Round”.  That was the time she made the news of their secret wedding public.

Then, the “Parks and Recreation” alum told the audience of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” how the pair had ended up tying themselves in nuptials after “getting just a little bored one night” during the COVID-influenced life quarantine.

She said she suddenly told Baena on the day of their wedding, “Hey, it’s our tenth anniversary; we should do something. Get an ice cream cone or do something special,” and joked about getting married.

Plaza said she found 1hourmarriage.com, a website that helps couples get marriage licenses and tie the knot in a short period of time, and they were able to wed.

The comedian pointed out, “We didn’t tell anybody we were doing it.”

Plaza and Baena dated from 2011, when they met through various collaborations like Life After Beth (2014) and The Little Hours (2017).

While Joshy, Horse Girl, and co-writer I Heart Huckabees rang a bell for indie film direction with this particular director, Baena, he was once known as Joshy.

A short  look at Baena’s professional career

Among his numerous screenwriting and directorial works, Life After Beth (2014), Joshy (2016), The Little Hours (2017), Horse Girl (2020), and Spin Me Round (2022), top the list alongside co-writing I Heart Huckabees (2004).

At the moment, details are hazy in regards to how he passed. Following his graduation from NYU Film School, Baena moved to Los Angeles to start up his career.

He became a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis on several movies before becoming an assistant editor for writer-director David O. Russell.

Baena is popular for co-writing I Heart Huckabees. It received a nomination for the Gotham Award for Best Feature in 2004. In 2014, he made his directorial debut with Life After Beth, which he also wrote.

The film debuted at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it competed for the Grand Jury Prize before A24 released it.

He next wrote and directed Joshy, which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. The film received a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize before its release by Lionsgate. Baena wrote and directed The Little Hours.

It won an Audience Award nomination at the 2017 Edinburgh International Film Festival and made a theatrical run.

In 2020, Baena co-wrote, directed, and produced Horse Girl. It premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival before its subsequent Netflix release. He also wrote, directed, and produced Spin Me Round, which premiered at the 2022 South by Southwest Film Festival and released by IFC Films.

On television, Baena created, wrote, directed and executive produced the Showtime series, Cinema Toast.

Baena leaves behind his wife Aubrey Plaza, mom Barbara Stern stepfather Roger Stern, and dad Scott Baena. Other family members are his stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena, stepsister and stepbrother Bianca Gabay, and Jed Fluxman.
