Chris Fawkes and his early life and education
British-born Chris Fawkes is a familiar face on British national television. He is the nation’s weather presenter. He was born in Marple near Stockport, the UK. Chris completed his schooling locally and has done a BSc degree in geography in 1999 from the University of Sheffield. Talking about his childhood interests, he had said in an interview:
“I’ve always been interested in science and physical geography and this course gave me the opportunity to study a large variety of subjects, many of which still have direct relevance to my job. I remember first looking at tephigrams in a Sheffield University lecture theatre; these show how temperature and humidity vary through the atmosphere. I still use these to help forecast things like thunderstorms and cloud amounts.”
Moreover, he had the opportunity to look at the chemical processes that occur during the destruction of the atmosphere’s ozone layer. He studied river dynamics to help him understand the flooding response type when there is a time of heavy rainfall.
Why did Chris choose Sheffield for studies?
Chris loved Sheffield because the University there was a reputed one both academically as well as socially, he said. The city has a large number of leisure-time facilities such as ski slopes, Ponds Forge, and theatres. It has a vibrant nightlife with pubs and restaurants. However , at the same time, it was less of a city and more of a friendly village. It has ample greenery with parks and the dramatic Peak District. Chris summarized:
“Sheffield has it all.”
The Sheffield University alum, Chris could manage to follow his favorite pursuits at Sheffield. He stated:
“Swim racing has always been a big part of my life. I raced regularly for the University of Sheffield swim team at events around the UK, including at the Nationals. I enjoyed training with the University and also with the City of Sheffield club at Ponds Forge.”
He was also part of a relay at the Nationals with the University swim team that won a silver medal. His batch of 1999 had gone for a field trip to the Sahara desert in 1999.
Career and personal life of Chris
Chris now works with the BBC channel UK. He predicts and airs weather forecasts around the world. He has a slim body and a pleasant personality and is liked and adored by his viewers. After his graduation, Chris took one year off to travel around the world. He had a lot of amazing experiences at that time. Giving updates on his career history, he had revealed:
“Then in 2001 I started working for the Met Office where I gained my forecasting qualifications becoming a Meteorologist, and later a Senior Meteorologist. During this time, I had roles in aviation meteorology, producing forecasts for the RAF, and also worked in acoustic meteorology producing forecasts for the Army. For a large part of my Met Office career though, I was posted at the BBC, forecasting and broadcasting for BBC One, BBC World, BBC News, Radio 4 and Radio 5 Live. In more recent years I’ve been employed directly by the BBC.”
He is aware that Meteorology is advancing and changing by the day. There is new science and innovations in technologies that help refine the weather predictions. He said:
“Since day one, I’ve never stopped learning.”
The major part of his job goes in “analysing data; observations, satellite imagery, radar, as well as model data to forecast the weather”. His longest broadcast is the live weather forecast on Countryfile on BBC One lasting three and half minutes. Some broadcasts are just a minute long and it is challenging for him to present all weather data in such a short time frame.
It was during his time at Sheffield, Chris met his future wife, Diane. She was also a student of geography at the same University. They started dating and later wed. But not much is known about her or their kids. But Diane works as the Global Product Manager – Cyber Security at Vodafone, London, UK.
