Brides-to-be stage a protest in Rome, Italy against the restrictions on wedding function during coronavirus pandemic!
  • It was the first time that future brides protested in public.
  • Yes, Italy witnessed this first-ever and rare phenomenon when brides-to-be protested in Rome.
  • They were against the restrictions that the government imposed on weddings during the coronavirus pandemic.

Additionally, an Italian wedding association organized this unusual event.

Brides-to-be protest in Italy

A group of fifteen brides-to-be assembled in Rome to protest against the new norms imposed for weddings in Italy due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As a result of it, they had to either cancel or postpone their weddings and hence were unhappy. Therefore, they all got together and organized a peaceful protest to voice their discontentment at the new measures pertaining to coronavirus pandemics and weddings.

And an Italian wedding association was behind this odd event. They called it a flash mob of the singles or unmarried ones.

The association revealed that due to the imposed restrictions, more than 90% of the weddings have been pushed forward to the next year. And around 500k workers in this sector ran the risk of unemployment.

The event was the first of its kind in the world. Never has such an event ever happened in the world in the history of humankind.

The prospective brides were in their white wedding gowns and holding light-blue colored parasols to protect themselves from the summer sun.

Furthermore, they were demanding that they should be allowed to have their marriage function with no compromise on any of their customs. They all gathered near the Trevi fountain in the Italian capital.

And some of them were holding placards that read:

“You broke our marriages.”

The other placards said:

“give us back the freedom to celebrate.”

“church doors closed to wedding.”

“a dream limited by restrictions.”

And,

“unrestricted marriage.”

But what is assuring is that they were all wearing their face masks. The wedding association is also demanding tax exemptions to cover their heavy losses. Because they stated that the lockdown had hit their industry the most and the worst.

Italian rules about wedding customs

Italy had imposed a lockdown over the past many months. They banned any sort of gatherings including marriages, cultural, or religious events.

Now after some control over the pandemic in the country, the government eased the restrictions a bit. Therefore, from 18 May 2020, they allowed wedding functions to resume. But people can hold it only with some restrictions.

The government has stated that the gatherings at the wedding should be small. All the attendees at the wedding should wear face masks. The government has made this mandatory even for married couples.

There will be no buffet dinner or lunch. Additionally, the rules ban the throwing of confetti on the newly-wed couple and there can be no bride’s bouquet.

This has angered the brides and they want their customs to be allowed at their wedding. It is not clear whether the event had any effect on the government. But it has gone down in history as the first of its kind.
