“But I’m just not getting involved in the drama of it all.”-Katie Couric’s opinion on the recent ‘Today’ show shakeup: Learn all about it!
Katie Couric on NBC ‘Today’ shakeup
The American journalist, producer, and author, Katie Couric gave her views on the recent NBC’s ‘Today’ show shakeup. She is quoted as having said:
“I haven’t talked to Tamron. I don’t know Tamron very well and I do know Megyn a bit. Unfortunately, They (some people) get very territorial and proprietary about it, and they read things into relationships.”
Incidentally, Katie Couric had worked as a co-host on this long-running NBC talk show from 1991 to 2006 and was a big name on that network. She left NBC to join CBS where she anchored ‘CBS Evening News’.
However, Katie Couric is quick to add:
“I think it’ll all work out. I think the show is great. And I wish Tamron well. But I’m just not getting involved in the drama of it all.”
The NBC shakeup drama
Tamron Hall, the American TV journalist was with NBC and MSNBC since 2007. Similarly, she co-hosted the ‘Today’ show since 2014. She was the first African-American woman to anchor this show.
But she decided against continuing with NBC after she came to know that her position on the ‘Today’ show would be given to the new entrant from Fox News, Megyn Kelly.
Megyn Kelly is an American journalist and political commentator. She has previously served as a corporate defense attorney. She has a controversial past and has been termed a racial demagogue.
Furthermore, she had accused the founder and the then Chairman and CEO of Fox News, Roger Ailes of sexual harassment and was responsible for his resignation-faced ousting from such a high post.
Tamron Hall is reported to have said:
“The last ten years have been beyond anything I could have imagined, and I’m grateful. I’m also very excited about the next chapter”.
Though NBC praised Tamron Hall for her work on the show, they were not too concerned about her exit. They said:
“We are disappointed that she has chosen to leave, but we wish her all the best.”
NBC News Group Chairman, Andrew Lack spoke flatteringly of Megyn Kelly:
“Megyn Kelly is a serious journalist and her work on Fox [News] commanded attention because of who she was interviewing, how she was interviewing them and what she was getting from them every night on television.”
He adds:
“We were a good fit for her.”

Popular opinions about this change-over
Tamron Hall’s fans were of course not too thrilled by this rearrangement. They took to social media to pour out their emotions. They felt that replacing Tamron Hall with a host accused of racism in the past is not a good idea. Many of them vowed to cease watching NBC as a mark of protest.
Beth Ellen Egan, the advertising professor at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School felt that this change will not negatively impact the show. He reminds:
“It has lost a lot of big people over the years and has still recovered. If I were … a big early morning advertiser, I wouldn’t be thinking twice.”
Al Tompkins, who is Poynter Institute’s senior faculty for broadcasting and online, has a contrary view. He feels that face recognition does not guarantee success since when Katie Couric and Anderson Cooper joined ‘Today’ they were big names, but they could not do so well on this daytime show.
The company will pay Megyn Kelly a whopping $20 million for this show. It remains uncertain if Megyn Kelly, lacking experience in daytime shows and only previously catering to evening audiences, can meet the company’s and audience’s expectations.
