He was a famous neurologist practicing in Calgary who has retired now. The police arrested Keith Hoyte after many women came forward after many years and filed an FIR with the police about their sexual assault at the hands of Keith.

His trial was to begin on Monday 6 January 2020. And he pleaded guilty to 28 sexual assaults during his 30-year career in medicine.

Keith Hoyte and his sexual crimes

Medicine is considered a noble profession. People trust the doctors treating them and do not expect mistreatment from him or her. But it seems that a neurologist from Calgary, Keith Hoyte tarnished the image of his profession by misusing his liberties with patients.

He sexually assaulted dozens of women during his clinical practice. He used to fondle their breasts under the pretext of clinical examination and had crossed the limits his profession gave him.

It took many years for these sexual assault victims to come forward and lodge their complaints with the police. They felt confident to complain after they came to know that other women similarly had suffered at the hands of Keith. One victim told the police:

“I didn’t have the confidence to say,”

“I knew it was my word against his word.”

A woman complained in 2018 and on investigating, the police found 2 more cases registered against the doctor for a similar offense in the past. Later, 25 more women came forward on learning that 3 complaints have been made against him.

How did Keith Hoyte commit the crimes?

Keith, 71 who has now retired from his neurology practice committed the crime between 1983 to 2013. The court documents also reveal the way he used to sexually assault his victims.

Crown prosecutor Rosalind Greenwood read the agreed statement of facts aloud in the court during the trial hearing which began on Tuesday 6 January 2020.

It described how victims who are in the age group of 17-46 felt confused, embarrassed, angry, and numb when they went to see the doctor and he examined them.

The women described that Keith would ask them to be naked waist up even though they were seeking medical consultation with him for neurological complaints like seizures or migraines.

They stated that he would fondle their breasts and prick pins in that area. During this eye examination, he used to not make any eye contact with the patient nor do any conversation with them. The doctor did not also explain to the patients before the examination as to what he was doing and what they should expect.

In some cases, he would just say that he is testing reflexes on them. Many women found the reason absurd but they were too scared to confront him at that time.

Keith Hoyte’s guilty plea to the sexual assault cases

The retired neurologist has now pleaded guilty to the 28 cases of sexual assault that he carried out during his 30 years of clinical practice.

Jim Eamon, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice has accepted Keith’s plea of guilty to 28 counts of sexual assault. He has admitted to having groped and fondled their breasts.
