Canadian model Catt Gallinger left partially blind due to eyeball tattooing! Know what the inventor Luna Cobra and AAO has to say about this body modification technique!
- There is a new fashion wave sweeping the world which is both extreme and dangerous.
- Increasingly people are resorting to body modifications which are proving perilous and lead to unnecessary medical emergencies.
- Tongue splitting, scarification, and eyeball tattooing are a few of such crazy techniques done on one’s body in order to change it.
Eyeball tattooing
In eyeball tattooing, the white part of the eye is injected with ink by means of a needle. Like the tattoos on the skin, in eyeball tattooing, the ink is injected into the thin conjunctiva which covers the whites of the eye (sclera).
Due to this, the whites of the eyes change color. Purple or other color ink is used. Just like a tattoo, an eyeball tattoo is also permanent.
This technique has been invented by Luna Cobra. He has been doing such adventurous and dangerous forms of body modifications since the mid-1990s.
He is into eyeball tattooing for the last decade. People often get the eyeballs tattooed for a different look, for fashion, to look like an alien, and just to impress their peers. Whatever the reason, this art form could turn eye-blinding.

Canadian model Catt Gallinger’s bad experience
Catt Gallinger, 27 is a Canadian model from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She had got her right eyeball tattooed purple recently and is now worried since the procedure has got botched up.
Catt Gallinger has shared her experience on her Facebook. After the procedure, the purple ink which was used to ink her right eye whites entered her eye interior and led to a blurring of vision.
She also has pain in that eye. She now has to undergo surgery to have the ink removed from her eye before it dries up.
She wrote:
“I would not recommend anyone to do this. I don’t think it’s worth the risk.”
She also risks losing sight of that eye. There would also be the permanent discolored one-side eyeball now. This could also potentially affect her modeling career.
Risks associated with eyeball tattooing
American Academy of Ophthalmologists does not recommend this procedure and is disappointed that people are going for this risky venture.
Dr. Philip Rizzuto, spokesperson for the Academy said:
“I would strongly recommend against it,”
He warns about the high likelihood of eye injury, infection, and blindness. The problem increases in the hands of an inexperienced person.
Rizzuto said:
“The needle can scratch the eye, causing infection, or an unsteady hand could send the needle through the sclera, the hard whites of our eyes, and disrupt its normal workings. Blindness, the loss of an eye and vision loss are real potentials”

He added:
“It’s completely avoidable by not doing it.”
Luna Cobra himself feels that it should not be done by inexperienced personnel. He is aware that the practice has landed in the hands of people who are not well-versed with the procedure and its risks.
He feels that eyeball or sclera tattooing should not be allowed to be carried out by unlicensed individuals. He feels that the art is not regulated and hence led to people getting hurt in the process.
Kuna Cobra said:
“I think the art is beautiful and it should continue, but I think it should continue in a safe manner.”
