Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire are no longer a married couple.
The couple shared the separation news in a joint Instagram post on Wednesday, August 2.
“Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,”
The two called it quits on their marriage after 18 years of togetherness.
In the statement, the now estranged couple mentioned that they will always “remain a close family” and have a “deep love and respect for each other and for everything they had built”.
They also asked for respecting their privacy during this time for the well-being of their children. Justin Trudeau and Sophie shared three children together named Xavier, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrien, 9.
The prime minister’s office also issued a statement on their divorce noting the two had signed a legal agreement.
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,”
“Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week.”
However, the reason behind their divorce has yet to be disclosed.

In 1987, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau first met Justin Trudeau during her high school years in Montreal as she was a classmate of his younger brother Michel.
The two cross paths again after 16 years to co-host a charity gala as Gregoire Trudeau was working as a TV entertainment reporter at that time.
The prime minister, 51, had just returned to Montreal after spending several years teaching in Vancouver.
The two instantly connected with each other and began dating shortly after.

Justin Trudeau popped the question to Sophie on the 85th birthday of his father, former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, on October 18, 2004.
On May 28, 2005, the pair tied the knot at Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church in Montreal. After two years, the couple is blessed with their first child a son Xavier James Trudeau, born on October 18, 2007.
The following year, Trudeau is elected as a Member of Parliament for Papineau, Que.
On February 5, 2009, Sophie gave birth to their second child and only daughter, Ella-Grace Margaret Trudeau.
Similarly, they welcomed their third child or second son Hadrien Gregoire Trudeau on February 28, 2014.
On November 4, 2015, Justin Trudeau was appointed as the 23rd and current prime minister of Canada.
He is the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history after Joe Clark.
