Maureen Maher on Adoption
The adoption word is quite near to Maureen’s Heart!
On CBS News, there was a “48 Hours” special, airing at 10, with the story of adoption and Maureen shared her story there as well.
Two years in the making, the hour called “The Lost Children” looks at children taken from struggling and poor Samoan parents and given to American families as part of a massive adoption scam.
The Samoan parents were assured the kids were going to foster homes and they’d be back once the families were in a better position. The American parents were made to believe they were legally adopting the children.
“You can’t not get personally involved, When you’re pursuing the actual factual part of the case, you have to step back and be objective.”
But, Maher says that when dealing with the adoptive parents involved, she was able to talk to them personally about her life as an adopted child, and what they may face down the road.
“If I have my own experience with something, I have no problem sharing that with the people in our stories. If I’m giving them a little piece of my story that helps them, I have no problem with that.”

Maher’s biological parents were high school seniors when her mother got pregnant. Similarly, her mother gave her up for adoption at birth and was confident that Catholic Charities would find a home for her.
“It was a stigma then, It would have been really hard for her to keep me. She loved me enough to give me up.”
When she was 16, Maher began piecing together her own story and is still in the process of gathering details for its completion. Further, her biological mother has been uncomfortable with Maher being back in her life.
“Every time she sees me, it’s a reminder of that pain, I understand that. It’s sad she can’t get past it,” Maher says. “But it’s okay. I feel very grateful for the choices she made. … It doesn’t mean I don’t get kicked in the stomach every time she pushes me away, though.”
Maher was able to share her experiences on adoption with the participants in the “48 Hours” special. In one emotional part of the story, Maureen Maher travels to Samoa with one of the families as they take their adopted child back to see her biological parents.
“I sobbed through the whole thing, I cried when we got off the plane. Not every reunion is like an Oprah-like reunion.”
The crime in the story is not the usual focus of “48 Hours,” but Maher wants viewers to understand this.
“People complain there aren’t enough good stories in the media. Often that’s true. Often bad news makes news,” Maher says. “But this is a good story.”
She is a strong woman and we respect her for sharing the story with us.
