Centre Room leading to the Buckingham palace balcony will open to public for first time!
Visitors to the royal palace of England have always been looking up at the Buckingham palace balcony from below. But now, for the first time in history, they can have a look from the inside. The room leading to the famous balcony, after renovation, has been opened to public on a trial basis.
The famous Buckingham palace balcony
We have seen the famous Buckingham palace balcony from outside. The royal family members all stand on it during royal events and ceremonies to wave at the crowd below and watch the event themselves and cheer the participants.
No one was allowed inside and onto this balcony. But now, after renovation, the room containing this balcony will be opened to the public on a trial basis from next week. The East wing of the palace has been renovated over the last five years and is now ready.
Guests wishing to see this special room will have to pay some money for it. They have have a peek inside the room but cannot step out onto the balcony. This is because the balcony is very narrow and the railings height is below waist level of an adult. Hence, for safety reasons, people will not be able to step onto the balcony.
What can guests see?
The guests to the royal palace cannot step onto the balcony. But they can peep out of the windows and have a view of the ground below where visitors gather for royal events. The royal author Robert Hardman has called the curtains there as “the most famous net curtains in the world”. Visitors can have the view that King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton have been having since so many years.
The view is very clear and one can appreciate the faces and expressions of the people standing below. You can view the pink gravel of the courtyard outside and also have a glimpse towards the Mall.
There is a Centre Room that leads to the gallery. This room is decorated in Chinese style. This wing was constructed around 175 years back. But for the first time, non-royal visitors can view it.
The Centre Room
The walls of the Centre Room is covered in Chinese oriental art theme. There is a huge chandelier hanging down from the centre of the ceiling and is shaped like a lily.
Queen Victoria had sold off her Royal Pavilion in Brighton in order to fund construction of this east side of Buckingham palace. The Royal Pavilion in Brighton was a seaside retreat and had a fusion of Chinese and Japanese themed furniture. These were all brought to Buckingham palace at that time.
Even the fixtures and fittings, that included the elegant doors, gilded curtain poles and the fireplace, and ornamental porcelain pagodas were all shifted to the east side of Buckingham palace.
Cost of one visit to the balcony is 75 pounds per person. However, the tickets are all sold out for this year. People will be shown around in groups of 20 only.
