Charlie Webster pens a book of her near-death experience when she had malaria and organ shutdown 2 years back!
- Just two years back Charlie Webster did not know whether she would live
- She was on the verge of dying
- Charlie is busy penning a book on her experience with near-death, she told Day and Night
Charlie on Day and Night
TV presenter Charlie Webster was on the show Day and Night. She told me about her writing a book about her experience.
“I’m writing a book. It’s memoir-y, not autobiographical. It’s about finding hope through adversity and traumas and strength and resilience.”
Her particular focus in this book would be on how people nearest to us can be of great help in overcoming the problems.
She continued:
“I’m talking about the unconditional love between a mother and daughter through that journey.
“My mum Joy’s voice is in it. She wrote me letters when I was in an induced coma. It’s unconditional love that gets us through stuff.”
Charlie praises NHS
Charlie all praises for NHS. She feels NHS played a pivotal role in her recovery. Incidentally, NHS is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.
She said:
“If it hadn’t been for the NHS, I probably wouldn’t have my kidneys working right now.
“I’m still being seen by an NHS consultant through an NHS hospital. What would have happened if I hadn’t?”
The malaria illness and the trauma
In August 2016, Charlie traveled to Brazil for the coverage of the Rio Olympics for Team GB Online. She became gravely ill at that time. Charlie had reached Rio in an unconventional way- by taking part in the 3000-mile charity cycle ride called Ride to Rio.
She had malaria and added bacterial infection with a superadded complication of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome or HUS, in short.
After day one, she had cramps, loose motions, vomiting, and uncontrollable bleeding. She had multiple organ shutdowns. Her kidneys failed and she was on dialysis.
Her mother Joy from the UK is beside her daughter.
A week later, her lungs gave way and collapsed. She was told that she was likely to die and they prepared her and her mother for the worse. She was put into a state of induced coma.

Now it is a miracle that she is able to talk and walk. She has gone through a nightmare and is traumatized even 8 months later. Charlie gets panic attacks while lying down such as for a spa treatment and also is under treatment for PTSD.
Furthermore, she said:
“It came as a bit of a shock, but the doctors said it’s normal. When you’ve been through what I have, your head can have problems processing it. People do find it difficult to understand. They think, “You were in a coma. You weren’t aware of anything”, but actually I was. I was aware of a lot of it.
‘At one point I had a conversation with Death in my head. It was real. I’ve spoken to a counsellor since and she said I had to accept it was real, and not think, “Oh, was I dreaming there?” Only then can I move on.’
She continued:
“Later, when I’d come out of the coma, I still couldn’t speak. I could hear the doctors asking me basic questions like, “What’s your name?”, “Do you know where you are?” and I knew the answers but I couldn’t get them out. To be trapped like that is the most horrible feeling you can imagine.”
