  • Their marriage lasted less than a year before they decided to separate.
  • The singer explained that Collins wanted to explore more experimental sexual experiences, which Holt found overwhelming and could not accept.

Cher recently revealed the surprising reason for her late mother Georgia Holt‘s fourth divorce, stating that it was due to Holt’s discomfort with her husband’s sexual preferences.

Holt, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 96, first met Collins at a party during the summer of 1957. They became engaged shortly thereafter.

At that time, Cher was just nine years old, and after Holt married Collins, she and her sister Georganne moved into Collins’ mansion in Beverly Hills.

Cher discusses her mother’s fourth marriage breakdown

In her memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part One, Cher describes how her mother divorced Joseph Harper Collins because he was “too wild in the bedroom.”

The singer, 78, reflects on the early days of Holt’s marriage to Collins, noting that after their wedding in 1957, her mother experienced a period of happiness and financial security.

She writes,

“All the stress left her life, as she didn’t have to worry about money or work or putting food on the table. Once we moved into Joe’s home, she became a different person entirely, happy and carefree.”

However, this bliss was short-lived, as Holt ultimately found Collins’ desires for sexual experimentation that involved other women, which was something she could not accept.

As Collins expressed his desire for a more adventurous sexual life, Holt struggled to cope with these changes in their relationship.

Cher wrote in her memoir that their marriage ended because “Joe swung too far the other way for my mother.”

The “I Got You Babe” singer described Collins as a “party animal” who enjoyed drinking and was excessively wild in their intimate life.

When Collins expressed his wish to be “more experimental sexually and involve other women,” Holt, whom Cher characterized as “naïve,” found it overwhelming.

Despite their attempts to save the marriage, it ultimately dissolved within a year. Cher recounted that her mother told Collins, “You know I love you, Joe, but I can’t do that.”

The singer writes,

“They tried for a long time to work it out, as neither Joe nor my mother wanted to face the end of their marriage, but the fantasy was over,”

Cher mentioned that after her mother divorced Collins, he provided financial support by paying for a new house for them to live in for six months as part of the divorce settlement while they got back on their feet.

“Joe was a class act.”

Throughout her life, Holt was married seven times to six different men.
