Chris Rock will not be hosting the 2023 Oscars
Chris Rock revealed that he was offered to host next year’s Academy Awards but he was not interested in doing so.
The offer comes months after Will Smith infamously slapped him on stage during the 2020 Oscars when Rock made fun of Jada Pinkett.
Rock has previously hosted the Oscars in 2005 and 2016. He revealed that he received the invite while doing a standup comedy at Arizona Financial Theatre in downtown Phoenix on Sunday.
The comedian also had been offered the chance to do a Superbowl Commercial but he rejected that as well.
While the crowd cheered on, Rock told his audience that he turned the offer down.
He also said that the slap from Smith hurt referencing how Smith played the role of boxer Muhammad Ali in a movie.
Rock said:
“He’s bigger than me,”
”The state of Nevada would not sanction a fight between me and Will Smith.”

It is unlikely Rock will ever host the show again
Rock compared returning to the Oscars would feel like returning to the crime scene, referring to the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, whose ex-wife’s murder began with her leaving a pair of eyeglasses at an Italian restaurant.
Many news channels have reached out to Rock’s reps and the Oscars for more information.
The infamous slap took place after Will walked on stage and hit the comedian in the face after he made Jada’s shaved head. Jada suffers hair loss due to alopecia.
Rock was unaware that Pinkett had alopecia which caused sudden hair loss. He thought she’d gone bald for a movie role.
Smith who won the Oscar for Best Actor that night was banned from the Academy for 10 years. He later shared a video apologizing to Rock and his family. He revealed that he was deeply remorseful about the slap.
In the video, the Pursuit of Happyness actor said:
“I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he will reach out. So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”
