Chrissy Teigen proposes mandatory social media downtime

Chrissy Teigen recently proposed that social media should have a daily curfew, recommending that it be turned off from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

In a series of Instagram Stories shared on January 19, she expressed her belief that an authority, like the government or an ethics committee, should enforce this rule.

In the video recorded from her bed, the 39-year-old actress said,

“I personally think that one day there will be the most incredible rule, I think the government, or some kind of ethics committee — somebody — should shut off social media between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Leave it all up. Everyone gets to do anything they want, but only between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Shut it off. Done.”

Teigen’s proposal for a curfew aims to encourage people to take a break from social media and enjoy life more.

She assured her audience that it is possible to be happy without being online all the time, saying that “life was great” before social media became so common.

She concluded by sharing her personal experience,

“I come from the days where we had nothing and then we saw something. Guys, life was great. Life was awesome before this, I know it’s hard to see it now. But it’s doable. It’s very doable. This doesn’t have to be our lives. And I say this for myself as well because — obviously — I’m on here [social media] right now doing this. But it doesn’t have to define us or be our whole lives,”

Chrissy Teigen expressed her views on social media curfews following the temporary ban of TikTok on January 18, 2025, due to ongoing government discussions regarding the app’s ownership and data security.

During this ban, over 170 million Americans could not access the app owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

The company had been given until January 19 to sell its U.S. operations to avoid a complete shutdown.

When users attempted to access TikTok during the ban, they encountered a message stating,

“Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.”

However, service was restored on January 19.

TikTok sparks debate over national security and mental health

In 2024, former President Joe Biden enacted a bipartisan law that mandated the sale of TikTok to an American company or a non-foreign adversary due to data privacy and national security concerns.

If TikTok fails to comply by January 19, 2025, the U.S. government said to impose a ban on the app.

As a result, TikTok faced a ban, but President Donald Trump extended the deadline for a potential sale by 60 to 90 days.

During a January 18 interview on Meet the Press, the 78-year-old President stated,

“The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation.”

Similarly, TikTok expressed gratitude towards Trump, confirming they were working to restore services for American users.

In a statement on X, TikTok Policy said,

“We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive.”

The statement further continued,

“It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States”

This situation arises amidst growing worries about how social media affects mental health.

In June 2024, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy stated in The New York Times that social media might lead to mental health problems among young people.

He wrote,

“It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents,”

“A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe,”
