On June 10, 2016, Grimmie was shot after performing as the opening act for Before You Exit at The Plaza Live venue near downtown Orlando. Grimmie’s brother Marcus heroically tackled her assailant Kevin James Loibl to the ground, before the latter turned the gun on himself.

The Grimmie family’s heartfelt message to The Voice alum’s dedicated fan base comes the day after a memorial gathering outside The Plaza Live, where the Orlando Sentinel reports more than two dozen fans came together — many outfitted in her favorite color, green — to pay tribute to the slain singer by lighting candles, laying flowers and singing some of her songs.
Said Danielle Hendrix, 32, who was in attendance at Grimmie’s final show,
“Honestly, it’s hard to be back here. It’s a little bittersweet because since she was killed here, many of us feel closer to her at The Plaza.”

E! News previously reported the story at the time of the event.
“It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn’t survive the gun shot wounds,” her publicist confirmed.
The singer was taken to a local hospital in Orlando, Fla., after being shot by a male suspect, who proceeded to shoot himself. Members of the band Before You Exit were signing autographs after a concert at Orlando’s Plaza Live when a male shot Grimmie.”
“Upon arrival officers found the male suspect, who was deceased and one victim who was gravely injured. That victim, singer Christina Grimmie, was transported to the hospital with critical injuries,” the Orlando Police tells E! News.
Grimmie’s social media accounts, particularly Twitter, have remained active as a place to remember and mourn her loss, with her family members frequently posting memorials and tributes to the late star.
