Christine Dawood recalls what happened before the Titan went missing
Christine Dawood, mom of 19-year-old Titan victim, Suleman Dawood revealed that she gave her seat to her son on the submarine as he really wanted to go.
In an interview given to BBC on Sunday, the grieving mother said that she was planning to visit the wreck of the Titanic with her husband Shehzada Dawood.
Their plans, however, were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shehzada was one of the five people who lost his life in the tragic accident.
Christine said,
“Then I stepped back and gave them space to set [Suleman] up, because he really wanted to go,”
“I was really happy for them because both of them, they really wanted to do that for a very long time.”
The young boy was so happy about the unusual trip and also took a Rubik’s Cube along with him on the expedition.
Talking about her son who could solve the puzzle in just 12 seconds, Christine said,
“He said, ‘I’m going to solve the Rubik’s Cube 3,700 metres below sea at the Titanic.’ “
Recalling the final words she exchanged with her now-deceased husband and son, Christine said,
“Well we just hugged and joked actually, because Shahzada was so excited to go down, he was like a little child. So the sentence, we lost comm, I think that will be a sentence I never want to hear in my life again.”
Dawood also revealed the exact moment she lost hope that her husband, son, and fellow passengers OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Paul–Henri Nargeolet, and Hamish Harding would be alive by any chance.
Despite the U.S. Coast Guard’s search of the Atlantic Ocean near the Titanic, they could not find a single trace of any victim.
She was onboard the sub’s Canadian support ship the Polar Prince during the mission. The mother of two said,
“Past the 96 hours mark, that’s when I lost hope,”
“That’s when I sent a message to my family on shore, ‘I’m preparing for the worse.’
“I miss them, I really, really miss them,”
Dawood paid tribute to her late husband and son
The teenage boy’s aunt Azmeh Dawood previously said that he went on the trip which took place on Father’s Day to impress his dad. She added that he wasn’t really that excited and was terrified.
Panic started when the vessel lost all communication with expedition vessel Polar Prince nearly 1 hour and 45 minutes into its dive on June 18.
The U.S. Coast Guard Captain Jamie Frederick said at a press conference in Boston on Tuesday that the Titan had an estimated 96 hours of oxygen at the start of the expedition.
OceanGate confirmed the deaths of all five passengers on Thursday afternoon in a statement. It read,
“We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost,”
“These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew,”
The following day, Christine and her family honored the father-son duo saying that they “mourn the tragic loss” with “profound sorrow” of the two wonderful people.
