In 1996, Helton was promoted to running backs coach. Helton followed his father at Houston in 1997 as running backs coach, a post he held until 1999. He received his degree in mathematics and transdisciplinary science from Houston in 1994. In 16 games with Houston, Helton completed 47 of 87 throws for 420 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions.

After leaving Houston, Helton joined Rip Scherer’s staff at Memphis, where he also served as running back coach. Tommy West succeeded Scherer in 2001. Helton remained on staff under Tommy West until moving on to teach the wide outs in 2003.

In 2007, Helton was elevated to quarterback coach and offensive coordinator. Furthermore, in 2005, Helton coached DeAngelo Williams, a first-round NFL draft pick, as well as Duke Calhoun, a 2006 Conference USA All-Freshman pick.

Lane Kiffin Helton was appointed as the quarterbacks coach at USC in 2010. He was eventually elevated to offensive coordinator in 2013. During their bowl game, Ed Orgeron, the team’s former interim head coach, resigned after Steve Sarkisian was hired.

On October 11, 2015, he returned as the Trojans’ temporary head coach when head coach Steve Sarkisian took a leave of absence, and was later dismissed. Furthermore, on November 30, 2015, USC removed the interim designation and appointed Helton the school’s 23rd head coach in history.

USC lost their final two games of the 2015 season to Stanford in the Pac-12 title game and Wisconsin in the Holiday Bowl, following Helton’s appointment as permanent head coach. In Helton’s first full season as head coach, USC opened 1-3, losing to Stanford, Alabama, and Utah.

Furthermore, it won the final eight games of the 2016 regular season, as well as the Rose Bowl against Penn State, finishing the season with a 10-3 record and third in the AP poll. Helton was relieved of coach duties at USC following a loss against Stanford on September 13, 2021.
