The greatest comic artist and co-creator of Spiderman Steve Ditko dies at 90!
- There would be hardly anyone in this universe who does not know the legendary comic character of the Marvel world Spiderman.
- The talented creator of such larger-than-life characters, Steve Ditko is no more.
This comic book artist was 90 when he breathed his last. The New York Police Department confirmed the death and said that he died in late June. When the police came to know and entered his apartment, it seems that he was already dead for two days.
Marvel Comics released a statement that read:
“Today, the Marvel family mourns the loss of Steve Ditko. Steve transformed the industry and the Marvel Universe, and his legacy will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and fans during this sad time.”
DC Comics also tweeted a tribute message:
“Steve Ditko was one of the most amazing creators in the history of comics, and showed us there is a hero in all of us. Our hearts go out to his loved ones, and everyone who knew him,”
Steve’s work in the world of comics
Steve and Stan Lee created Spiderman. Steve had given the superhero the traditional look with the red and blue colored suit and Web shooters.
He had also imagined and conceived the looks of Spiderman villains such as Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, and the lizard. He was the artist for the comic for its first 38 issues.
He and Stan Lee also together gave life to the character of Doctor Strange. In 1966, he left Marvel due to credit problems and creative differences.
He was with DC Comics for some time and created Creeper there. He did some other characters and also Squirrel Girl.
Marvel Chief Creative Officer is Joe Quesada and he said:
“And much like his greatest co-creation, Steve Ditko’s legend and influence will outlive us all.”
Steve Ditko’s later years of reclusive life
Steve was said to be an uncompromising genius. As his created characters hit the big screen, Steve opted for a more private life away from the limelight. He refused interviews. Steve was extremely focused on his work and he wanted people to look at his work and not him.
The directors who gave life to his characters on the big screen of Hollywood wanted him to watch their movies and opine, but he was not traceable.
Scott Derrickson who directed Doctor Strange in 2016 said:
“I hope he goes to see the movie wherever he is, because I think we paid homage to his work.”
Jonathan Ross of BBC tweeted:
“I am beyond sad. For me, the single greatest comic book artist and creator who ever lived, Steve Ditko, is gone. Thank you for your tireless brilliance and boundless imagination, Steve, you uncompromising genius.”
Steve’s work had changed the life of stars like Tom Holland who wore a Steve-designed suit in the Marvel movie. Tom tweeted:
“He made so many people so happy and changed lives – most of all, mine! Thank you Steve – your life lives on man, thank you.”
We all want to leave our mark on the world – this guy crushed it.
