Cosmetic surgeries: British Parliamentarians call for a ban of these procedures in children less than 18 years!
There is a craze amongst people for cosmetic surgeries. Even teenage girls are resorting to body modification techniques to look more beautiful or to camouflage their defects if any.
Many times, the defects are just normal variations but at that age, they think otherwise. This trend of going under the knife seems to have increased after watching reality TV shows such as Love Island where many celebrities of the show have done some procedures on their body.
There is a growing concern about all this and now British politicians have called for a ban on these procedures in children under 18 years of age.
Cosmetic surgeries and teens
British lawmakers people and parents are concerned about the growing trend among schoolgirls of opting for cosmetic surgeries on their bodies.
It could lead to a lot of health issues and problems such as infections, scarring, tissue death, and also blindness.
Schoolgirls are increasingly resorting to these risky facial procedures putting their lives in danger. This trend to have body modification procedures on their body and face has risen after watching reality TV shows such as Love Island and Geordie Shore.
Most of the young celebrities on the show have had some sort of plastic surgery on their body. Botox, lip fillers, breast augmentation, and the like can be seen in the celebrities on the shows. This craze and imitation are not healthy and also risky.
There have been cases of partial lip amputations due to these procedures. Hence British politicians have decided to go vocal. They have asked for the regulation of this industry.
The call for a ban on plastic surgeries for teens
Conservative parliamentarian Laura Trott said:
“We must stop the dangerous and unnecessary non-medical procedures that can ruin children’s lives,”
Laura is at the head of an appeal to pass a bill in Parliament that would criminalize any such procedure on children less than 18 years of age. She talked about a survey that showed that around 100k people under 16 had done the procedure so far. That is a huge number!
Further, Laura told in Parliament:
“The absence of a legal age limit for Botox and dermal fillers means any 15-year-old could walk into a shop and get their lips injected by someone with no qualifications whatsoever,”
“This cannot be allowed to continue.”
Did the other lawmakers support Laura?
The other Parliamentarians agreed with what Laura said. They believed that the no-regulation of the industry has made it possible for teens to get procedures on their bodies that could be risky in the long run.
They voiced their full support for the bill. Further, they felt that social media is to be blamed for the normalization of these risky facial surgeries.
Save Face, a national register of accredited practitioners that campaigns for stronger regulation states that the number of botched surgeries has increased tremendously. Its Director Ashton Collins also agreed that social media and shows such as KUWTK are responsible for this rising trend of surgeries in teens. She added:
“Girls think these are risk-free treatments like getting your nails or hair done. When in fact they are serious medical treatments that could cause horrible things if they go wrong.”
Botox injections were meant for elderly ladies. But now teens have started using it to prevent wrinkles!!!
