Brown was born Cyntoia Denise Brown on 29 January 1988, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, US. As of 2024, her age is 36.

Her mother’s name is Georgina Mitchell but there is no information about her biological father. Even at the time of pregnancy, her mother drank alcohol.

After giving birth to her, she became addicted to crack which forced her to place her for adoption. A decent couple, Thomas Brown and Ellenette Brown adopted her.

Despite being treated properly by the couple, she ran away from their home at the age of 16 and eventually ended up with a man named Garion McGlothen Jarvis at an InTown Suites. In the streets, he was well-known by the name, ‘Kut-Throat’ or ‘Kut’. He used her for trafficking. She supported Kut and herself through involuntary prostitution.

The Cyntoia Brown Case

On August 6, 2004, Johnny Allen, a 43-year-old real estate agent, picked Cyntoia Brown up in a parking lot and asked her if he was hungry and was up to something. She said ‘yes’ to both of the questions. He took her to his house and Brown paid her $150 for sex. Although she did agree to have sex, they did not have intercourse.

While they were in bed, she shot and killed Allen. She told police that she thought he was pulling out a gun and that acted in self-defense. The police arrested her with charges of homicide, aggravated robbery, handgun possession, and criminal impersonation.

Even though she was a minor at the time, she was tried as an adult. In court, the prosecutors questioned her claim of self-defense, arguing instead that she had killed Allen to rob him.

She was found guilty and the judge sentenced her to life in prison for first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.

But during the course of her years in prison, things changed. The #MeToo movement was very popular and there was a national push for criminal justice reform. Public perception of Brown shifted from a sex worker to an underage girl who had been used by men who held more power.

The case received a lot of attention from celebrities and advocates. They argued that a life sentence was too harsh a punishment for a minor and under the conditions she was in at the time. Celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian West, LeBron James, and Cara Delevigne campaigned in 2017 for her freedom.

After serving 15 years in prison, in August 2019, she was released from prison after then Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam granted her clemency.

After Prison

Atria Books published a memoir of her life in the prison called ‘Free Cyntoia: My Search for Redemption in the American Prison System’ on October 15, 2019.

On April 29, 2020, Netflix released a documentary entitled Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown. Brown, however, has confirmed that it is unauthorized and she did not participate in the production.
