Dating app users have higher rates of cosmetic surgeries!
Dating app users have a lot of mental and health issues. They run the risk of getting scammed too. Additionally, a new Australian study has shown that users of virtual dating also subject themselves to more cosmetic surgeries than non-users.
Dating app users and cosmetic surgeries
Since the advent of dating apps, the landscape of dating has seen a dramatic change. However, everything is not pleasant on that front.
There are some who manage to find their soulmate on these apps. But there is an even larger share of the users who are unable to do so. They face fatigue and burnout.

Additionally, besides scams, there can be rejection problems leading to mental issues in users. Offensive and rude comments and body shaming add to the woes. All this leads to users getting conscious of their beauty and its standards reach unrealistic levels.
A recent study was conducted in Adelaide, Australia to find out the correlation between use of dating apps and the rates of cosmetic surgeries performed on them.
The new Australian study
Researchers from Adelaide, Australia conducted a survey to find out how many people are using dating apps and how many are not. They also studied the number of plastic surgeries in each group.
The research team did a cross-sectional correlational survey. The aim was to find out the relation between use of the modern technology of dating apps and self-presentation style and cosmetic surgery in adult women.

308 women were queried on it and their median age was 25.29 years. Previously, studies have shown a definite association between social media users and the high rates of cosmetic surgeries in them. However, specific studies to determine whether dating apps also lead to same outcome was not yet studied. Hence, this is the first s udy of its kind from Australia. It is published in the latest issue of the journal, Computers in Human Behavior.
The results of the study
Nearly half of the surveyed individuals had used a dating app in the last couple of years. 20% of the participants had undergone a plastic surgery in the past. This was significantly more in those who had used the dating app. And they demonstrated a more positive attitude towards this type of surgeries and procedures. These included anti-wrinkles injections such as botox and also dermal fillers. This was due to the desire to present self falsely on these apps.
This study revealed that dating app users did have a higher rate of cosmetic surgeries performed on them. The women who were using dating apps were more than willing to undergo plastic surgery compared to those who had never used these apps. The former were more likely to go under the knife.

This is because due to online dating, the standards of beauty have reached a new high and strange threshold that is many times unrealistic. It could pise harm to the physical and mental well-being of the users.

These users of dating apps also were more stressed and felt the pressure to present them in a particular way in order to gain attention of prospective dates. They had body dissatisfaction despite the fact that many images on these apps are photoshopped to look good.
Technology has its plus points. But one must be careful of the negatives that come with it and play safe while using these apps.
