Rapper David Jolicoeur, the founding member of De La Soul, dies at 54
David Jolicoeur, who co-founded the influential hip-hop group De La Soul, has passed away at 54. His representatives confirmed his death on Sunday, and the news was first reported by the music outlet AllHipHop.
Before passing away, rapper Trugoy the Draper talked about having congestive heart failure; however, the cause of his death is still unknown.
He was not present at the recent Grammys, where De La Soul had previously won an award in 2006 for their collaboration with Gorillaz on the song Feel Good Inc.
What was the cause of death of David Jolicoeur?
During the final years of his life, Jolicoeur had congestive heart failure and needed to use a LifeVest defibrillator to alleviate its symptoms. He publicly shared this information for the first time in November 2017 during a special scene in the “Royalty Capes” video clip.
In the video, he discussed how his heart problems affected his ability to perform and tour consistently with De La Soul. He said:
“[The LifeVest defibrillator] will shock me, and hopefully bring me back from the matrix. I’m ready just to get back to the stage. I miss it. I love traveling; I love being around my guys. And I want that back.”
Although De La Soul performed at the 50 Years of Hip-Hop special event during the 65th Annual Grammy Awards on February 5, 2023, Jolicoeur was not present on stage with his bandmates.
Although the exact cause of his death is unknown, it is possible that his heart condition deteriorated and caused his death.

De La Soul had a huge impact on the hip-hop world
De La Soul, who formed in 1987, produced several popular rap songs in the 90s, with two of their albums achieving platinum and gold certification.
Their hit songs include “Me, Myself and I,” “Eye Know,” “Ring Ring Ring,” “Say No Go,” “Breakdown,” “Oooh,” “Buddy,” “All Good,” “Ghetto Thang,” “I Am I Be,” “Ego Trippin (Part 2)” and “The Magic Number.”
Despite transitioning their style over time, they were able to retain their uniqueness. Although they were nominated for three Grammy Awards, their collaboration with the Gorillaz on “Feel Good Inc.” won their one and only Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration in 2006. Jolicoeur had co-written that song.
However, their music has not been readily available for streaming until recently when a deal was signed to make their classic tracks widely accessible starting next month.
