What led to death of Bill Paxton? Know about the lawsuit  against the hospital and surgeon treating him!

Noted American actor, Bill Paxton died on 25 February 2017 due to complications post-heart surgery. Bill’s widow, Louise Newbury, and his two children, James and Lydia filed a case of negligence against the hospital and surgeon. What was the case about? What was the outcome of it?

Bill Paxton, the famous American actor was born on 17 May 1955 in Fort Worth, Texas. His father was John Lane Paxton and his mother was Mary Gray. His father owned a business, and later, worked as a museum executive and an actor. Bill studied at the Arlington Heights High School and graduated in 1973. Later, he joined Richmond College in London.

He moved to Los Angeles and worked in the props and art department. He was a parking valet at Beverly Hills Hotel. Bill went on to get good roles and gained fame. He got married to Kelly Rowan in 1979. But it was a brief marriage since they divorced the next year. They shared no kids together.

Bill met his second wife, Louise Newbury on the bus. No. 37 at Twickenham, London. At that time, she was a student. They dated and wed in 1987. Their son James arrived in 1994, while daughter Lydia was born in 1997.

Bill’s health issues, surgery, and death

Bill’s mom died in 2016. And in 2017, he was diagnosed with post-rheumatic fever damaged aortic valve, and aortic aneurysm. He consulted the doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The heart surgeon, Ali Khoynezhad advised him surgery to replace the damaged valve and the correction of the aortic aneurysm.

On 14 February 2017, Bill had an open-heart surgery. However, he suffered excessive blood loss and had heart arrhythmias and tachycardia with ventricular dysfunction. He had to be shifted to the cardiac intensive care unit. Further tests on him revealed coronary artery damage. He was taken up for an emergency second surgery.

However, he continued to remain critical and after 10 days on 25 February 2017, he developed a stroke that took his life. Bill was just 61 years old when he died.

Bill’s family files a lawsuit

One year after Bill’s death, his wife and kids filed a case of negligence against the heart doctor l, Ali, and the hospital. The papers said that Dr. Ali was inexperienced in this type of surgery but still took it up. Moreover, he used unconventional and high-risk methods to repair the aortic valve and correct the aneurysm. This led to Bill’s deterioration and death. The court was to hear the case in March 2022.

But in February 2022, the hospital, doctor, and his insurance company reached a negotiation with Bill’s family. The General Anesthesia Specialists Partnership settled the case by paying Bill’s family USD 1 million. And in August 2022, the case was closed. The terms of the settlement remain undisclosed to date.

Louise was also an actress. In 1998, she worked on a music video named Martini Ranch: Reach. She was cast as herself in the TV special titled The 2001 IFP/West Independent Spirit Awards. James is an actor while daughter Lydia works as a voice artist. Moreover, she is a programmer and has worked as the PR director at a digital publication based in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, USA. The name of the publication is The Standard.
