Deborra-Lee Furness talks of her evolution and learning after divorcing her ex-husband, Hugh Jackman!

It has been seven months that Australian actor, Hugh Jackman split from his wife of 27 years, Deborra-Lee Furness. How is Deborra-Lee faring in her personal life after the separation? She detailed how she has evolved over these months. It seems the split has helped her in many ways.

The evolution of Deborra-Lee Furness after split

Australian actress, Deborra-Lee Furness, 68 separated from her husband of 27 years, Australian actor, Hugh Jackman, 55 in 2023. She has opened up now about her life after the split. On 9 May 2024, Deborra-Lee was at the New York screening of the film, Force of Nature: The Dry 2.

She told People magazine about how her life has undergone positive changes after the separation. She added that she has learned a lot about herself. Deborra-Lee said:

“[I learned] that I’m strong and resilient,”

“And that I—we are all a constant evolution.”

Earlier, in January 2024, she had told Daily Telegraph of Australia:

You know what, change, transition, evolution is a little frightening and we are all a bit scared of it,”

And she continued:

“but I think it is probably our greatest gift.”

The relationship timeline of the couple

Deborra-Lee and Hugh had met on the sets of the Australian TV show Correlli in the year 1995. They started a relationship and exchanged wedding vows on 11 April 1996. The wedding venue was St. John’s in Toorak, Victoria, which is a suburb of Melbourne.

The couple wanted to start a family and bear kids together. But, unfortunately, Deborra-Lee suffered two miscarriages. She was almost forty years of age at that time. Hence, the couple went in for adoption. They adopted a male child, Oscar, who was born in 2000 and a female child, Ava, who was born in 2005.

However, their marriage collapsed in 2023. They released a joint statement to People magazine that read:

We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage,”

“Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”

Deborra-Lee and her career

In her young days, Deborra-Lee learned typing on the suggestion of my mother who had said that in case her acting ambitions fail, she should have some backup job to do. The actress was in the newsroom for a year. Later, she became a researcher on the show, No Man’s Land. 

After traveling Europe for one year, Deborra-Lee did a degree in acting from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts situated in New York City. She did theater and acted in some TV dramas before returning to Australia for her acting career.

Deborra-Lee gained fame in the year 1988 when she acted in the film Shame. Her acting skills were appreciated and she won Best Actor awards of Film Critics Circle of Australia and also the Golden Space Needle Award of the Seattle International Film Festival.

Deborra-Lee was in a number of films and TV series until 2016 when she starred in Hyde and Seek series on TV in the lead role of Claudia Rossini.

After a hiatus, she will now be seen in Force of Nature: The Dry 2 in the role of Jill Bailey.
