Disinfection tunnels for coronavirus pandemic – Usefulness and ill-effects on health???
- The people of the world are at their wit’s end when it comes to dealing with the deadly coronavirus.
- The governments are trying various remedies to lessen the transmission of the virus.
- Since it is a highly virulent and fast-spreading virus, there has not been research into it yet.
Hence countries and politicians are using various unresearched ways to decontaminate people and minimize the spread of the virus.
Some countries have installed disinfection tunnels to curtail the spread of coronavirus. How effective and safe are these disinfection tunnels? Let us find out.
The disinfection tunnels’ overview
In the wake of the recent coronavirus pandemic, many countries in the world have taken disinfection to a new level. They have installed disinfection tunnels through which they make people pass before entering an area.
The countries that started this innovation include Turkey, Vietnam, China, Thailand, and some parts of India. People use a hand sanitizer and then enter the tunnel which releases some disinfecting gases.
They seem to be imitating each other but is there any solid evidence as regards its efficacy in the current pandemic? Besides, the effectiveness how safe are these tunnels for humans?
The disinfection tunnels – efficacy?
Several videos of such disinfection mists being sprayed into a tunnel through which clothed people pass with mouths and noses covered are doing the rounds on social media.
Though authorities claim that it is effective, there has been no scientific study into its usefulness. Besides, no proper evaluation has been done about whether after the installation of such tunnels, there was a noticeable decrease in coronavirus cases or not.
How can the disinfecting gases clear the virus from the nose and mouth area of the asymptomatic carrier or an active case? These areas are the ones spreading the virus and disinfection tunnels cannot eradicate the virus from these body cavities.
How safe are these tunnels?
Besides limited efficacy, experts question the safety of these gases for humans. The gases and disinfectants when absorbed through the skin might cause ill effects to humans.
They may harm the eyes and mucosa of the nose and throat. It is especially not good for people with skin or other organ allergies.

Besides, the wide and mass spraying of streets with disinfectants has worried the environmentalists. This could likely lead to an ecological imbalance.
The reason is that the disinfecting chemical not only kills the coronavirus but also the other bacteria that the ecosystem requires for its balance.
Hence hand sanitization is still the best method to contain the virus. Regular handwashing with soap and ample water is best, safe, and economical.
