Marvel Phase 4
Marve Studios has seriously taken the subject of diversity in Hollywood. It has decided to have as its next generation of superheroes those who are special and different from the previous ones.
At this year’s Comic-Con, Marvel released to the world the names and features of some of its special and brand-new characters for the comic world and the films. It has taken a step forward in this field and has introduced diversity in Hollywood in the true sense of the world.
Hence, not Marvel comic books and films will have a deaf superhero which would be the first of its kind in the world. The Marvel Cinematic Universe also has its first Asian-American superhero. Besides, it has also created a character that is the first openly gay superhero in the world.
Marvel Studios and its new ventures and people
Marvel has introduced to the world a new set of superheroes. There will be more women who will now take up the reigns of direction for the upcoming movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A presenter and Marvel fan Claire Lim stated to BBC News:
“Marvel are trying to strive for diversity in a way that doesn’t feel forced,”
Claire added:
“They’re just trying to represent what we see on the streets.”
Marvel and the criticism for this bold move
Marvel has been trying to introduce something new for its worldwide fans and viewers. Many of them are happy about the new steps of Marvel for the goodness of Hollywood. But every new thing comes with some criticisms.
Similarly, Marvel also has some critics who do not like this bold step of Marvel for diversity in Hollywood. There are some cynical critics who feel that Marvel has taken to creating new and diverse superheroes after it tasted success with its first black superhero in 2018 in The Black Panther.
LJ Thomas wrote:
“Does anyone else feel a little icky that in this vast #MCU they didn’t care about diversity or representation until phase 3, and then AFTER they made sure it’s profitable they announce ALL THE DIVERSITY for #MarvelPhase4?”
A second Twitter user named Hippie J tweeted:
“I’m happy we have more diversity in phase 4 but I’m not overly about to praise the mcu and marvel studios be[cause] they waited until it was profitable to do so.”
But there are praises for Marvel Studios as well…
Lim does not see any ulterior motive of Marvel in introducing new superheroes. She wrote:
“I think it’s genuine, because a lot of millennial and Gen-Z people expect diversity. They don’t want it as an add-on.”
The deaf actress Lauren Ridloff will play the character of superhero Makkari in Eternals which will release in 2020. Many social media users are happy for her and feel that it will give a chance to the deaf kids to feel that they too can be superheroes. Lauren is also proud and feels honored to work with great stars of Hollywood.
