Doris Day, After her Divorce in 1981 is Still Single, But What About her Past Affairs? Get to Know the Relationship history of Doris Day
- Doris Day, a well-known actress and singer, who is ironically said to have just found her true age at the age of 95, has been married four times in her life.
- After divorcing in 1981, she is still single (maybe it’s due to her age factor).
Here, we’ll be diving into her relationship and marriage history.
First marriage with Al Jorden
Day first met Al Jorden, a trombonist, in Barney Rapp’s Band. The couple married in March 1941, when she was age 17. Her only child, son Terrence Paul Jorden (later known as Terry Melcher), was the sign of this marriage.
They divorced within 2 years amid reports of Jordan’s alcoholism and abuse of the young star. Despondent and feeling his life had little meaning after the much-publicized divorce, Jordan later committed suicide by gunshot, in 1967.
Second marriage to George Weidler
Doris’ second marriage was to George Weidler, who was a saxophone player, and former child actor. Weidler’s sister was a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer child actress named Virginia Weidler. Doris Day and George married on March 30, 1946.
After living together for more than 3 years, they divorced on May 31, 1949. Weidler and Day met again several years later. During the brief reconciliation phase, George helped introduce her to Christian Science.
Dating with Ronald Reagan
Day also briefly dated Ronald Reagan, with whom she co-starred in Storm Warning (1951) and The Winning Team (1952) – shortly after his divorce from Jane Wyman. She and Reagan were contract players at Warner Brothers.
Doris Day had told him that he was so good at talking that he should be touring the country making speeches. At the time, the future Republican President was a Democrat.
Dating Jack Carson
Doris Day had a 1-year affair with Jack Carson when Jack Carson was married to Kay St. Germain Wells.
Marriage with Martin Melcher
She married producer Martin Melcher on April 3, 1951. Martin Melcher produced many of Day’s movies. Both were both practicing Christian Scientists, resulting in her not seeing a doctor for some time after symptoms suggestive of cancer. This distressing period ended when, finally consulting a physician, and thereby finding the lump was benign, she fully recovered.
This marriage lasted until Melcher’s death in the year 1968. Melcher went on to adopt Day’s son Terry, who, with the name Terry Melcher, later became a successful musician as well as a record producer.
Fourth Marriage to Barry Comden
Her fourth marriage was to Barry Comden, 12 years her junior, on April 14, 1976. The two had met at the Beverly Hills Old World Restaurant. Comden came to know about her love for pet dogs, and hence while she was exiting the restaurant he offered her a bag consisting of meat scraps and bones.
In the 1970s, Barry Comden opened an Old World restaurant in Westwood. He also supervised the construction of another restaurant named Tony Roma’s, in Palm Springs.
They lived together in Carmel but Comden’s complaint was that Day preferred the company of her dogs more than him and they divorced in 1982, April 2.
Afterward…
After her last divorce, she is currently single. Even if she is dating, she has kept the information about her relationship private.
Her grandson, Ryan Melcher wrote a heart-wrenching post stating about her,
“I received the news of my grandmother’s passing like many of you — I awoke and read the news in a social media feed Monday morning.”
