Ed Sheeran has lost one of his beloved family members
Ed Sheeran is inconsolable over the death of his Irish grandmother, Anne Mary Sheeran (nee Mulligan).
Anne died peacefully aged 98 at Castle Gardens Nursing Home in the Republic of Ireland last Tuesday, April 25.
However, the cause of her death hasn’t yet been revealed.
In her obituary, Anne was remembered as “beloved wife of the late Bill and loving mother of Jim, Bill, Peter, Chris, John, MaryAnne, Bridget and the late Sally and sister of the late Thomas, Jim, May, and Peggy.”
Similarly, the notice continued,
“Deeply regretted by her loving sons, daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, niece, nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours,”
Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3 in St. Patrick’s Church, Monaseed, Gorey.
Additionally, Ed has had difficult times in the recent few weeks because he is currently facing a copyright lawsuit regarding his song, Thinking Out Loud.
The family of Marvin Gaye alleged there are “striking similarities” between Sheeran’s song and Gaye’s 1973 hit, Let’s Get It On, co-written with her father, Ed Townsend.
Meanwhile, Kathryn Townsend Griffin, who is among the heirs of songwriter Ed Townsend, has filed a $100 million lawsuit against Ed Sheeran. The trial is currently in its second week.
Ed was inspired by Anne for his song Nancy Mulligan from his 2017 album Divide
Ed’s 2017 hit Nancy Mulligan is all about the love story of his parental grandparents.
The song tells the story of Ed’s grandfather William “Bill” Sheeran, a Derryman who, in spite of coming from a different religious background, fell in love with Ane and wed her on the Wexford border.
Speaking about the track, Shape Of You singer, 32, described,
“My grandfather is a Protestant from Belfast, and my grandmother is a Catholic from Wexford and when they got married it was like a real thing. But they went against people, got married and ended up being married for 66 years before my grandfather passed away.”
Similarly, the musician remarked that “this sort of Romeo and Juliet romance” existed between his grandparents, calling it “the most romantic thing.”
Nancy and William are survived by eight children, 23 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
