Elaine Quijano was born in 1975 in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America. She is of American nationality and her ethnicity is Filipino.

Her mother is from the Philippines and immigrated to America after World War II. Her father was killed in a US airstrike against the Japanese. Similarly, her mother had a very difficult childhood hence, her mother graduated when she was 28 years old.

Elaine Quijano was raised in the Skokie and Morton Grove suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She has a sister and she is an MIT graduate.

Elaine Quijano’s career in journalism as an intern at WCIA TV in Champaign, Illinois in 1994 but was later promoted as a reporter, anchor, and producer. In 1998, she axed her duty in WCIA and joined WFTS TV in Tampa, Florida as a general assignment reporter.

She started her work in the CNN affiliate, CNN Newsource in December 2000 and covered the US invasion of Iraq, the Columbia disaster, Beltway sniper attacks, the Pentagon, Supreme Court, the re-election of George W. Bush as well as the 9/11 incident among many other such events in 2003.

In 2004, Quijano joined CNN/US as a Washington D.C based general assignment correspondent and covered the Pentagon, the Supreme Court, the 2004 re-election campaign of President George W.Bush, and the campaign of vice presidential candidate John Edwards.

In 2006, she became a White House correspondent for CNN. After leaving CNN in December 2009, Elaine Quijano was called upon to join CBS News in 2010 whereby she started as a general assignment reporter.

In CBS News, she covered Hurricane Sandy and the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012, the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, and the 2014 World Cup. She is also an anchor on CBSN, the digital streaming network for CBS, and the Sunday edition of CBS Weekend News. In 2009, Quijano was the convocation speaker at the UIUC College of Media, her alma mater.

In 2016, she was named as the moderator for the vice-presidential debate by the Commission on Presidential Debates. So, she became the first Asian American to moderate a U.S. debate for national elected office in the general election and the youngest journalist to moderate a debate since 1988.

Elaine Quijano was awarded the News & Documentary Emmy Award for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a News Magazine. She was also nominated for News & Documentary Emmy Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast.
