Eminem and his last Academy awards attendance
The famed singer Eminem had last attended the Academy awards ceremony before 2003. In 2003, he decided to no more go for the annual function. But he had won an award that year as well. Instead, he sent his collaborator Luis Resto to take the award in his place.
Barbra Streisand was doing the honor at that time of handing over the award.
Eminem’s performance at this year’s Academy awards function
And at this year 2020 Academy awards function, Eminem gave a surprise performance. He performed live on stage to his oscar-winning song Lose Yourself. And the gathered crowd went rapturous.
The performance followed a montage to celebrate the sound editing/mixing award and a footage from 8 Mile. The younger celebrities in the crowd were singing along with the song. While the senior stars which included Brad Pitt, Leonardo Di Caprio, Billie Eilish, and Anthony Ramos stood up in respect and applauded the great performance at the end. It was a scene worth watching.
This is not the only surprise of Eminem in recent years. In 2018, he dropped a surprise album called Kamikaze and just last month, he released his another album called Music to be murdered By.
The news is that when Eminem used to do rehearsals at the Dolby Theater for his performance of last night, the theater used to be locked down during the period. Besides, the organizers had agreed that if the secret of his performance by chance leaked out, he had the option open to cancel it.
The reason on why the singer performed now
Eminem told Variety:
“I kinda figured maybe since I didn’t get a chance to do it at the time, maybe it would be cool. Back then, I never even thought that I had a chance to win, and we had just performed “Lose Yourself” on the Grammys with the Roots a couple of weeks before the Oscars, so we didn’t think it was a good idea. And also, back at that time, the younger me didn’t really feel like a show like that would understand me.
“But then when I found out I won, “That’s crazy!” That to me shows how authentic and real that award is — when you don’t show up and you still win. That makes it very real to me.”
He was happy about his recent performance and the fact that he could hug Salma Hayek. But talking about the secrecy and rehearsals, Eminem said:
“We flew in [to Los Angeles] last week, so we probably have four or five rehearsals just to make sure we got everything right. Most of the rehearsals were offsite, not in [the Dolby Theater], just trying to keep it secret.”
