He became a sorting clerk and telegraphist in Edinburgh on 8 April 1936. He was promoted to the clerical class on 10 March 1937.

Eric Lomax started as a British Army officer. He was one of the active and one of the best army officers of his time. At the age of 19, he joined the Royal Corps of Signals. In Dec 1940, he got a promotion to the second lieutenant.

His service number was 165340. In 1942, he was captured by the Japanese. He was forcefully taken to Kanchanaburi, Thailand. In Thailand, he built the Burma Railway by force.

He was then transferred to Outram Road Prison in Singapore for the remainder of the war. In 1949, he was awarded as  Efficiency Medal. He was also granted as the honorary rank of captain. In 1949, he retired from the British army. He joined  Colonial Service and was posted to the Gold Coast.

After that, he worked for Scottish Gas Board and Strathclyde University. He retired in 1982. According to the data, he was the first patient of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture.
