Pamela Hayden retires from The Simpsons after voicing Millhouse for 35 years
End of an Era! Pamela Hayden has announced her retirement from The Simpsons, an animated sitcom, after a thirty-five-year tenure and nearly 700 episodes.
She is best recognized for voicing Bart Simpson’s best friend, Milhouse, along with other characters such as Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, and Sarah Wiggum.
Her final performance will be featured in the episode titled “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,” set to air on Sunday, November 24.
In a heartfelt video shared by Fox on November 20, Hayden reflected on her time with the show, stating,
“The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons? Not easily. It’s been an honor and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show.“
She expressed gratitude for her experience, saying,
“Here’s to everyone who made this terrific ride I’ve been on possible. Thanks for 35 years!! Be well and happy. My best to you all. P.S. I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that blue-haired 10-year-old boy with gasses.”
In the tribute video, which included clips of Milhouse from over the years, Pamela Hayden shared her fondness for the character, calling him her “main guy.”
She mentioned that fans frequently quote Milhouse’s lines that highlight his nerdy nature, but what she appreciates most about him is his resilience.
Hayden noted that even though Milhouse faces many challenges and setbacks, he always finds a way to get back up.
A fond Farewell to Pamela Hayden from colleagues
Executive producer James L. Brooks reflected on Pamela Hayden’s legacy, describing her as “a model for having a great spirit for every cast she has been a part of.”
Meanwhile, series creator Matt Groening commended her contributions, noting,
“Pamela gave us tons of laughs with Milhouse, the hapless kid with the biggest nose in Springfield. She made Milhouse hilarious and real, and we will miss her,”
Additionally, showrunner and executive producer Matt Selman expressed his admiration by stating, “Everything’s coming up Pamela!”
What type of character is Milhouse Van Houten in The Simpsons?
Pamela Hayden has been a prominent voice on The Simpsons since its premiere in 1989. She voiced the character of Bart’s best friend, Milhouse Van Houten.
In addition to Milhouse, she has voiced several other characters, including Jimbo Jones, Rod and Todd Flanders (Ned Flanders’ sons), Chief Wiggum’s wife Sarah, and Lisa’s friend Janey Powell.
According to the show’s creator, Matt Groening, Milhouse was created to provide Bart with a companion for conversations in the school cafeteria.
The character is named after former U.S. President Richard Milhouse Nixon. Groening humorously noted that they chose this name because it was “the most unfortunate name a kid could have.”
Milhouse first appeared in a Butterfinger commercial during the show’s early days as a segment on The Tracey Ullman Show and became a central character when The Simpsons transitioned into a half-hour series.
As the only child of Kirk and Luann Van Houten, Milhouse is portrayed as smart, shy, and somewhat gullible, which often leads him to be misled by his best friend Bart and targeted by bullies.
