Fashion! Will Welsh tapestry make it to Hollywood and be accepted by the celebrities? Let us know!
The celebrity fashion designer
Welsh fashion designer Jayne Pierson has been designing fashions for various famous artists and actors. She interned and worked at Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.
She launched her collection called On/Off during the London Fashion Week in September 2009. Born in Carmarthenshire, she was raised in Dallas, Texas.
Currently based in Carmarthenshire, Jayne owns a studio at Pembrey airport. Her previous designs had been worn by Beyonce, Ellie Goulding, and will.i.am. Jayne has also worked with fabric from one of the eight surviving woolen mills of Wales.
The present state of the Welsh woolen mills
Welsh woolen mills were the most important part of Welsh culture before World War I. It was a big industry and there were more than 300 mills functional at that time.
But slowly with the mechanization of the woolen mills of Northern England, the Welsh mills faced tough competition and could not survive. Many of them closed and the few remaining are just small units at home.
The mill owners also fear for their future since there is a skills shortage and also sales are less.
Jayne’s hopes are rekindled
Jayne spotted Rihana’s stylist in one of the Welsh tapestry pieces and her hopes are rekindled for this dwindling fabric and industry. She hopes that the fabric will become a celebrity hit too.
Jayne also had a Vogue photoshoot for the Welsh wool tapestry pieces. She said:
“Oftentimes [people] see these woollen blankets in charity shops or vintage fairs and to see them reworked into something contemporary and edgy and maybe with leather or pleats… the reaction has been really good.”
She added:
“Maybe younger people aren’t so familiar with the heritage of Welsh wool – [they can] look at it again and be introduced and turned onto something that is actually very beautiful.”
Jayne has done work with Melin Tregwynt in Castlemorris, Pembrokeshire, and it showed that the product could have a bright future in fashion. Talking of this rediscovery, Jayne said:
“Hopefully [I’ve created] something that is a slow, sustainable fashion that is taking something age-old and reinventing it and upcycling it and making it relevant now to a younger consumer,”
About Jayne’s remote studio
Jayne’s studio is in a countryside airport. But she is happy with it. She said:
“I love being away from London – I think it’s good for the soul, to be able to breathe and then absorb other things apart from fashion… I feel we have space and landscapes and wonderful horizons to be able to have that space to think of new concepts and new innovations.”
Jayne adds:
“And I’m able to use local skills, local heritage and crafts that are based in Wales so that makes me unique and gives me a unique signature… I couldn’t imagine living in London or anywhere else to be honest.”
Jayne has an ambition that is yet unfulfilled that she should be able to dress a Welsh celebrity in these pieces from the Welsh. She said:
“I haven’t actually dressed any Welsh celebrities yet so that would be fabulous… Tom Jones with a tailored jacket with Melin Tregwynt wool on it – that would be fantastic.”
Update: Jayne designed for London fashion week 2020.
