Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has confirmed the passing of Chaim Topol, the actor famously known for his portrayal of Tevye the milkman in Fiddler On The Roof. He passed away on March 8, 2023, at the age of 87.
He was Oscar-nominated for his singing performance in the movie adaptation of the musical in 1971, and he also appeared in other well-known films such as Flash Gordon, Follow Me, and For Your Eyes Only.
Despite being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease some years ago, Topol remained a much-loved figure, and Herzog paid tribute to him, describing him as a talented actor who had won the hearts of many.
Topol is survived by his wife Galia, with whom he had three children, Anat, Ady, and Omer.
In recent days, Omer had spoken to Israeli media about his father’s illness, saying that despite the early stages of Alzheimer’s, Topol had still delivered memorable speeches and performances, covering up his problems with his remarkable acting skills.
Omer told an Israeli news outlet:
“When he won the Israel Prize, his Alzheimer’s was in its early stages. He spoke wonderfully at the ceremony, and also at other events, and no one even felt it.”

Frozen actor Josh Gad also paid his tribute:
