Desmond Mason faces arrest

Former NBA player, Desmond Mason, 47 was arrested on Wednesday 13 November 2024 in Oklahoma. The records of Oklahoma County Detention Center reveal this truth. Desmond was embroiled in a nasty divorce battle with his wife, Andrea Mason.

Desmond’s detention came just before the mid-day and was due to his contempt of court. He did not appear for his court hearing related to divorce recently.

Later, the same night, at 9.34 pm Desmond furnished a bond of USD 50k and the police then released him. There are no more details related to the divorce case available yet. The divorce proceedings was going on outside the media scrutiny. But now, since his arrest in it, his personal life has come into the spotlight.

Desmond Mason’s career

Desmond was drafted in 2000 as the 17th overall pick out of Oklahoma state into Seattle Supersonics. He did well in the early part of his career. In 2001, he topped the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Washington DC. He defeated big names such as Baron Davis, DeShawn Stevenson, and Corey Maggette at that time. In 2003, he tried again to get the title. But Jason Richardson defeated him.

Desmond played from 2000 to 2009. In this career of almost a decade, he played for Seattle Supersonics, Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Hornets, Oklahoma City Thunder and Sacramento Kings. His last play for NBA was for Sacramento Kings in 2009 after which he took retirement.

Since his retirement, Desmond has kept away from the limelight. However, in 2018, he did make an appearance on the reality TV show Below Deck Mediterranean.

New York Post report that Desmond had a keen interest in arts. He paints and big stars such as American actor George Clooney, sports broadcaster Joe Buck, American businessman Rande Gerber, and CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz have purchased his work.

Desmond, the artist-athlete and life off the court

In 2000-2001, Desmond was serving as a rookie for NBA. At that time, he was asked to report to the NBA office in Midtown. It was a surprise meeting with David Stern who was the NBA commissioner at that time. Desmond was nervous and did not know why he was called there.

But later, he came to know that David had heard about Desmond’s art career from an article in Sports Illustrated when Desmond used to play for Oklahoma State as a senior. Desmond had also studied studio art at that time. Desmond who hailed from Texas told New York Post:

“I was really the only artist-athlete at the time. He thought it was interesting,”

David purchased from him one of his drawings; a portrait of Al Pacino in ‘Carlito’s Way’. He paid USD 500 to Desmond at that time for it. Desmond was flattered and feels that he would have given the painting to David for free.

There is not much known about his married life, except that he and his college sweetheart, Andrea had wed in 2002. The two share two children; Jada, 16 and Elijah, 13. His work was on display in 2014 in a gallery in Oklahoma. At that time, he had said:

“Art calms me, it blesses me, it fills me and it has helped mold me because it allows me to be free,”

He had added:

“My son is about to be 3 years old and likes to scribble but my 6-year-old daughter is very artistically talented and that’s not just a loving dad saying that; that’s from an artist.”
