Gabrielle Giffords: her health update and opinion on gun possession laws!
Gabrielle Giffords, 53 was born in 1970. The year 2011 was a bad one for her and changed her life completely. The attempted assassination on her life sent her to the intensive care unit followed by years of rehabilitation. How is her condition now? What rehabilitative measures did she take? Is she against gun possession now?
Gabrielle Giffords and the assassination attempt on her
Gabrielle Giffords is a politician from Arizona who is 53 now. More than a decade back on 8 January 2011, a man named Jared Lee Loughner shot her in the head when she was at the “Congress on Your Corner” session in Casas Adobes outside a Safeway store. The man was against the government and obsessed with Gabrielle. He hit nineteen people and killed six on that day.
Gabrielle was fatally injured. Her intern, Daniel Hernández Jr. gave her first aid after which Gabrielle was immediately shifted to the University Medical Center of Tucson. She was critical and had severe head injuries. She had paralysis of the right side and eye injury too. Her skull part was badly damaged and she had to undergo cranioplasty for it.
Talking of her condition, Gabrielle told later:
“Many may look at me and see mostly what I have lost. I struggle to speak, my eyesight’s not great, my right arm and leg are paralyzed, and I left a job I loved representing southern Arizona in Congress.”
Gabrielle and her rehabilitation journey
Gabrielle had a prolonged and intensive rehabilitation schedule after her assassination. The road to recovery was painstakingly long and gradual. Gabrielle had said:
“Rehab is endlessly repetitive. And it’s never easy, because once you’ve mastered some movement or action or word, no matter how small, you move on to the next. You never rest.”
Further, she praised the medical community and added:
“Countless hours of physical therapy – and the talents of the medical community – have brought me new movement in my right arm. It’s fractional progress, and it took a long time, but my arm moves when I tell it to.”
Music and singing helped her a lot. She stated:
“Music has always been really important to me.”
“Music therapy was so important in the early stages of my recovery because it can help retrain different parts of your brain to form language centers in areas where they weren’t before you were injured.”
“While my speech is getting better every day, throughout my recovery, I have been able to sing to some extent.”
But speaking has been difficult for her ever since. She has not lost hope and continues to fight to make the world a safer place to live. She had once said:
“People have told me that I’m courageous, but I have seen greater courage.”
Is Gabrielle against gun possession now?
Though Gabrielle was nearly killed due to a gunshot from a pistol, she is not against gun possession. She had stated:
“Some might consider me an unlikely advocate for gun rights because I sustained terrible injuries in a violent shooting. But I’m a patriot, and I believe the right to bear arms is a definitive part of our American heritage.”
“As gun owners, my husband and I understand that the Second Amendment is most at risk when a criminal or deranged person commits a gun crime. These acts only embolden those who oppose gun ownership. Promoting responsible gun laws protects the Second Amendment and reduces lives lost from guns.”
Gabrielle demands a deeper and thorough background check before giving gun licenses to people. According to her:
“Expanding background checks will help create a uniform standard for all gun purchases and prevent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from obtaining powerful weapons.”
Further, she feels:
“Gun owners and non-gun owners alike agree on expanding background checks, making gun trafficking a serious crime with stiff penalties, making it illegal for all stalkers and all domestic abusers to buy guns, and expanding mental health resources so the mentally ill find it easier to receive treatment than to buy firearms.”
