A new Gallup study reveals that number of LGBTQ+ adults in the US has more than doubled since 2012!
LGBTQ+ percentage is on the rise in the USA, a new Gallup survey has revealed. Around 7.6% of Americans now identify themselves as being LGBTQ+. This is more than double of the percentage of LGBTQ+ people in 2012. And one in five Gen Z adults identify themselves as LGBTQ+. More women are in this group compared to men.
The new Gallup study on LGBTQ+ people
A new Gallup study 2023 was done to estimate the number of people in the USA who identify themselves as belonging to the LGBTQ+ community. These include lesbians, gay people, bisexual people, and transgender.
The research team did the study in 2023. In this survey, they conducted telephonic surveys on 12000 Americans who were aged 18 years and above.
The surveyor enquired with each study participant about their sexual identification as heterosexual or straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or something else.
Results of the study
Of the 12000 respondents, 6.8% refused to answer the question. However, 85.6% said that they are straight or heterosexual and 7.6% identified themselves with one or more of the above LGBTQ+ groups.
The percentage of people in this study who were not heterosexual is more than those reported in the previous years. Four years back, the people who were in the LGBTQ+ group were 5.6%. Whereas, in 2012, American adults stating that they were not of straight sexuality was 3.5%.
Thus, the number of people in the LGBTQ+ group is steadily rising. It is now more than double of that in 2012. The latter year was the first time that Gallup had done this survey to determine the number of people who are not heterosexual.
If we look at the subgroups of the LGBTQ+ population, bisexual adults are the majority. They are 57.3% in the group and are 4.4% of the US adults. After this, the next common are the gay and lesbian groups, each making 1% each of the US adults. Thus, they are around one in six of these not-straight adults in the USA. Less than 1% of US adults are transgender people. Less than 2% each of the LGBTQ+ adults are pansexual and asexual each.
More insight of the data results
Most of these LGBTQ+ adults belong to Generation Z and the millennium kids who have now become adults. There is an increased percentage of LGBTQ+ adults in young people. In fact, this figure is as high as one in five of Generation Z adults in the age group of 18-26 years who identify themselves as belonging to LGBTQ+ group.
Of the 27-42 years of age, one in 10 (10%) are LGBTQ+. The percentage of these in the other age groups are 5% in Generation X (early 1960s to late 1970s), 2% in baby boomers (1945 to 1965), and 1% in the silent generation group (1926-1946).

Similarly, bisexuality is common in Gen Z, millennials, and Gen X people. More than two-thirds of Gen Z are bisexual. In older generations, they were either gay or lesbian and not so commonly bisexual.
Women were twice as likely to belong to LGBTQ+ compared to men. These were mostly bisexual. Whereas men were equally gay or bisexual. Even in the younger groups, women are more likely in this group of LGBTQ+ rather than men. 28.5% (3 in 10) Gen Z women were LGBTQ+. This percentage was only 10.6% in Gen Z men. In millennials, it was 12.4% of women and 5.4% of men who were in the LGBTQ+ community.
20% of Gen Z women and 9% of millennial women are bisexual. Gen Z men are more likely to be bisexual than gay. Millennial men are equally gay or bisexual and older men are more likely to be gay.
Non-binary people constitute 1% of US adults. The percentage of LGBTQ+ in this group is not known for 2023. But for years 2022 and 2023, 80% of them are LGBTQ+ adults, 1/3rd are transgender people and 1/3rd are bisexual.
