Generative AI risky for dating app users particularly women!

Generative AI has arrived but it is a dangerous tool for everyone using dating apps. Surveys show that it poses more danger to women on dating apps.

Generative AI and its impact in the dating scenario

Generative AI produces new ideas and content including images. If this AI is applied to dating apps, it could be a precarious situation.

Sumsub company that tries to ensure cyber safety conducted a survey recently. It interviewed 2000 people in the UK who were using dating apps.

The survey revealed that approximately 50% of dating app users believed that generative AI carries a high risk if applied to the dating app arena. 46% of those surveyed felt they deepfake are particularly harmful. These can lead to violence including sexual abuse. And 49% of the interviewed individuals were worried about the high risk of emotional trauma and mental issues with them.

58% felt that risk of deception and awkward and fraudulent dates was more when AI was present in the virtual dating areas.

Women are vulnerable

The AI might impact all users of dating apps. But women are more likely to fall prey to deepfake issues and scams on online dating. Around half of the surveyed women were frightened of falling victims to these scams and suffering mental abuse. 48% were concerned about getting physically assaulted by them. In men, these figures were lower: 45% and 43% respectively.

Lesser percentage of women were willing to use dating apps where AI images were used compared to men. 45% of women and 40% of men were not willing to use dating apps with AI photos.

What experts say?

Natalia Fritzen is an AI expert. She is its compliance and policy specialist from the UK at the above company. According to her:

Deepfakes and other AI generated content in the hands of nefarious actors is a danger to everyone with an online presence – but girls and women are particularly at risk. This is true online, where women the world over have had deepfaked nudes of them artificially created and circulated. In person, new and additional risks arise when generative AI can be used on dating apps to mask identities and create misplaced trust – with the aim of causing physical, emotional, or economic harm.”

While anyone can have bad intentions towards anyone else, it’s women that remain the main victims of gender-based violence. The prevalence of convincing artificial content online, and the growing ease of creating and distributing it, is a new weapon in the arsenal of those looking to manipulate, deceive and harm women,”

The internet desperately needs stronger safety guard rails to protect vulnerable users from AI-led harm and manipulation – and while Governments banning the creation and dissemination of deepfaked pornography is a good start, more needs to be done by regulators and Big Tech companies to stop it at the source.”
