Two decades before, Spice Girl Geri Halliwell decided to leave the band. Her departure was known to the general public in the middle of a world tour. Her decision was sudden and did not leave much time for goodbyes—or apologies.
A fan account tweeted,
“19 years ago today, it was announced that @GeriHalliwell had left the Spice Girls in the middle of their world tour.”

To which Halliwell retweeted and replied:
“I’m sorry about that … everything works out in the end, that’s what my mum says! X.”

When she left in 1998, she did not speak about her decision openly. In an interview in 2010, Halliwell explained that she had been planning to leave at the end of their world tour. But on the tour, Halliwell was asked to give an interview about breast cancer hence was told to talk about the departure. She said,
“I just got really angry, very emotional about it, because it was something very close to my heart. . . I was meant to be the advocate of girl power, and I felt like a hypocrite if I couldn’t do something . . . for empowering women. So, I had to go. I had no other choice, really.”
Interview with Oprah Winfrey
Halliwell called the move to exit the British band “immature” during an interview with Oprah Winfrey,
“It felt like it had grown into this huge monster, bigger than the individuals, bigger than the band itself. Obviously there was a bit of ruction in the band, and I was thinking ‘You know, I just don’t want to do this anymore.’ It was like, ‘You’re getting on my nerves and I don’t know how to talk this through, so I’m out of here.’ It was quite immature, looking back.”
But the good news is that she is still close to her former bandmates: Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, and Melanie Brown. The Spice Girls reunited when they performed at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

@SpiceGirlsFilm I know it sounds silly but my 15 year old self was so devastated at the time. I felt like I lost family.
